A new study commissioned by the Canadian Nuclear Association reveals the scale of the challenge ahead: by 2050, electricity demand will double or even triple as we decarbonize our economy, expand industry, and accommodate our growing population and emerging technologies like AI. The numbers are staggering: we'll need to add 150 gigawatts of new firm generation capacity, more than the size of Canada's entire electricity system today. Key insights from the study: 1) No single technology can meet this challenge alone. 2) Nuclear energy is uniquely positioned to provide reliable, affordable, non-emitting baseload power. 3) Even under the most ambitious nuclear build scenario, nuclear would provide less than half of the 115 GW of new baseload capacity required. This underscores both the urgency of action and the unprecedented opportunity ahead for Canada's energy sector. We're excited to share this research publicly for the first time. Canada is abuzz with talk of nation-building projects, but much of that talk is about energy supply - pipelines, transmission, nuclear. Our Office of Energy Research and Development (OERD) hosted two sessions on the outcomes and impacts of the Government of Canada’s programs for electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure and smart grids.💡 At the Electric Mobility Canada EVVE conference in British Columbia, we highlighted current transportation innovation priorities and an analysis from our previous EV infrastructure demonstration program results to show how project results influenced policies, regulations and access to new technology. The session also included first-hand experience from leaders of past projects who reflected on their demonstrations’ achievements and lessons learned. 🚗 During Toronto Climate Week | TOCW we presented the smart grid innovation project outcomes achieved two years after their completion. This was followed by a dynamic panel discussion on electricity transformation, customer experience and how we can collaborate to enable clean, reliable and affordable electricity. ⚡ Participating in these types of events encourages innovation, facilitates conversations and creates awareness about ways to use energy sustainably.
