Earlier this month, we brought together leading academics, diplomats, policymakers, and artists from across Canada and the world for the Possibilities of Peace Conference. The conference fostered an interdisciplinary dialogue on the nature of conflict and possibilities for peace in our current global context. We welcomed over 75 participants, and were inspired by the keynote address from Dr. Payam Akhavan. Attendees engaged in discussions on a wide range of topics, including the definition of peace, Canada's foreign policy, and international law. A heartfelt thank you to our conference chairs (Ryan Liss, Valerie Oosterveld, and Bipasha Baruah), organizing committee, speakers, and partners who made this event possible. We are grateful to everyone who joined us and shared their insights and ideas.

As a fourth-year Political Science student, I’m continuously reminded that the most valuable growth often happens outside the classroom, through spaces that challenge how we think about justice, power, and accountability. Last week, I had the opportunity to attend the Possibilities for Peace in the 21st Century conference hosted by the WAFAR - Western Academy of Advanced Research. The discussions brought together an incredible group of scholars and practitioners to explore how the international legal system can respond to today’s complex and evolving landscape of war and conflict. A particular highlight for me was the panel on “Criminal Accountability in an Age of Great Power: Is Multilateralism Over?”, facilitated by Masud Husain , featuring Norman Farrell and Judge Kimberly Prost. Their insights on the future of international justice and the limits of accountability in today’s geopolitical climate were both sobering and inspiring. A heartfelt thank you to the brilliant organizers and fellows who made this conference possible: Professor Ryan Liss , Professor Valerie Oosterveld, and Professor Bipasha Baruah for curating such an engaging, interdisciplinary space for dialogue on global peace and law. And to the outstanding speakers and panelists Leah West, Lena Moore, John T. Holmes, Sylvain Vité, Christopher Waters, Pascal Michelberger, Dr. Ola Osman,Uzma Rashid Sabine Nolke 🇨🇦, Ken Watkin, KC, Cecilia Bailliet and Norman Farrell , thank you for sharing your expertise, experience, and thought-provoking insights. Finally, I would to extend my heartfelt thanks to Dr.Laszlo Sarkany for inviting me to this amazing conference! Note: Shout out to Hiba Shaikh Ansari and Shambhavi Siddhi for being such a great group in this conference! Couldn’t have asked for better friends to learn with! Events like these remind me why I’m passionate about pursuing law, to contribute to the evolving conversation about how international systems can better secure peace and justice in our world.

“Working in Canada was where I really cut my teeth as an economist. The atmosphere at Western University was the one that really taught me how to be a productive scholar and I’m forever grateful for that.” - Dr. Peter Howitt, Nobel prize winning economist. #onpoli #cdnpoli

Today, September 30, we observe National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (NDTR). This day is dedicated to honouring the children who never made it home and the Survivors of residential schools. It also serves to raise awareness about the intergenerational impacts these experiences have on their families and communities. 🧡 All are welcome to pay respects at a sunrise ceremony and sacred fire at Wampum Learning Lodge from 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., led by Elder Mike Hopkins. This day was originally recognized as #OrangeShirtDay, an Indigenous-led grassroots initiative inspired by the experiences of residential school survivor Phyllis Webstad. In 1973, six-year-old Phyllis arrived at the St. Joseph Mission Residential School, proudly wearing a brand new orange shirt for her first day. Unfortunately, the school swiftly took her shirt away, replacing it with their institutional uniform. To commemorate the resilience of the children who survived residential schools, and to remember those who did not, we encourage everyone to wear orange today. While NDTR is one day observed annually, the work of Truth and Reconciliation must be embraced daily to foster meaningful and lasting change. Buildings across #WesternU's campus have been illuminated in orange this week to recognize this important day. For more resources, visit indigenous.uwo.ca/NDTR
