“Being part of this exhibition allowed us to engage with different cultures from all around the world, such as seeing Mongolian throat singing, trying dates from Saudi Arabia, drinking tea from South Korea, and learning about the variety of uses of cacao from Venezuela.” Moriah Mallick, Master of Science in Foods & Nutrition student, recently represented Western University on the world stage, joining Assistant Professor Dr. Peggy O’Neil from the Faculty of Health Sciences at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in Rome, Italy. Together, they participated in the world’s very first From Seeds to Foods exhibition, hosted in celebration of the FAO’s 80th anniversary. Western University was featured in the North America Pavilion, contributing to regional themes of heritage and sustainability in food systems. This global event brought together institutions across six continents, with each pavilion highlighting not only scientific research but also the cultural richness of food traditions across the globe. O’Neil reflected on the broader mission of the FAO to achieve food security for all through high-quality nutrition: “We’re going to feed the world and bring peace to humanity.” Western’s participation reinforces its role in advancing global conversations on food, nutrition, and sustainable agriculture, and the importance of student-faculty collaboration in international settings. We’re so proud to showcase the incredible advancements happening within our Faculty! 📸 [Photos: Moriah Mallick and Dr. Peggy O’Neil at the exhibition in Rome]
