Unitaid's first "climate and health" call for proposals is out! Its full name is "Investigating the heat stability of health products in the context of climate change" (https://lnkd.in/dPBw8D2g). What does this mean concretely? 👉 Our initial research (just published here: https://lnkd.in/dnEztSjJ) shows that some health products (medicines, diagnostics, etc) can already be exposed during their lifetime to temperature and humidity conditions that can impact their quality and reliability. Temporary exposure to high temperatures (up to 50°C or more) can happen for instance on tarmacs, during customs clearances, truck transportation or storage (think about primary health facilities, or even a patient's home). Some products are known to degrade or not function properly after such exposure. 👉 With climate change, health products will be under even more stress. This is not about 1.5, 2 or 3°C more. This is about more frequent and intense heatwaves, heavy rains, floods, etc - and consequently, medicines and other products experiencing more frequent and intense excursions far outside their specified storage conditions (both temperature and humidity). In other words, climate change could make essential health products less effective - impacting quality of care and equity. 👉 The issue: little evidence is available about the extent of the problem, which products or product classes are most at risk, which countries or regions are most vulnerable, or what solutions do or may exist. Our future investments will aim to fill some of these gaps and accelerate the development of heat resilience solutions. This also aligns well with the Belem Health Action Plan developed by the Brazil Presidency for #COP30. 👉 Interested? Please join our upcoming webinar (November 5th) or come see us at COP30 (more on this soon). Huge thanks to everyone involved - especially Nathaniel Moller and Julien Pouille, many other Unitaid colleagues, and the numerous countries, experts and partners consulted through the Alliance for Transformative Action on Climate and Health. 🌡️ In advance of COP30, Unitaid is launching a new funding opportunity to heat-proof health products 🌍💊 Submit by 23 January 2026 at noon CET. Much of the world experiences environmental conditions that can push medicines, diagnostics, and other essential health products beyond the limits they were designed to withstand. From manufacturing sites to last-mile delivery, storage and use, rising heat and humidity can threaten product quality and access to care—especially in the regions that need them most. Unitaid is calling for proposals to generate evidence on how extreme temperatures and humidity affect products and to explore opportunities for innovation. This investment is part of Unitaid’s Climate and Health Strategy and builds on insights from our new paper, "Heat-Proofing Health Products: Adapting to a Hotter Planet". Together, we can ensure lifesaving products stay safe, effective, and accessible in a hotter world.
