  • A simple leaf can power the transformation of an entire community! That’s just one of the heartening stories you can read in our 2024-2025 Annual Report, published this week and available on our website now. But how can a leaf do this? Well, forest-dwelling communities in many parts of India have long collected fallen Sal leaves to make leaf plates or cups. In Odisha state, a group of indigenous women from the Khond tribe have taken this ancient practice to new heights. With the support of local NGO and Cartier Philanthropy partner Industree Foundation, they’ve set up collectively-owned production facilities where women from their tribe make plates and other tableware from Sal leaves, creating eco-friendly alternatives to disposable plastic products. Industree supports them with training as well as product design, development and market access, helping them satisfy growing demand from domestic and international markets. Meeting the women artisans working in these production facilities, we found these aren’t just their first jobs, but also the first time they’ve ever had the opportunity to work outside the home, contribute to their families’ incomes and gain financial independence. Nearly three in four have seen their income grow by an average of 33% and many report feeling more confident in themselves and more connected to their communities. You can read more inspiring partner stories like this in our Annual Report, and of course learn more about these remarkable women and their transformative work. We are pleased to share our Annual Report for 2024 – 2025, published jointly with Cartier for Nature, Cartier’s philanthropic initiative for the conservation of biodiversity and ecosystems. The report offers a look at some of the most encouraging results our 89 partners have been able to achieve for vulnerable communities and ecosystems. For example, the Luminos Fund brought 70,000 out-of-school children back to the classroom in 2024 though their accelerated learning programme. Thanks to this programme, learners not only catch up to their peers, but often end up outperforming them in the long run after integrating public school. During the same period, Integrate Health worked with 325 Community Health Workers in Togo and Guinea to bring essential healthcare to over 300,000 patients. In the communities they work in, 90% of children who show symptoms of an illness are evaluated and treated within 24 hours. Alongside these impact updates, the report also makes the work of our partners come to life through stories of people, places and progress – from the remote savannahs of Northern Australia to the forests of India’s rural Odisha state. 🦏 Rhinos roamed the Earth long before humans made their appearance. Yet, humans have pushed these ancient, iconic grazers to the brink of extinction. Today, most remaining #rhinos live in fenced-in reserves under heavy guard, as poaching remains an acute threat to their survival. However, in Namibia's Kunene region, community conservancies are offering a different vision. Working with our partner IRDNC (Integrated Rural Development and Nature Conservation) as well as the Save the Rhino Trust Namibia and the Namibian police force, they safeguard the world's largest population of free-roaming Black rhinos - not through force, but through trust. Each animal is closely monitored by a team of community rangers and specialists, and local people are at the heart of protection efforts, serving as guardians and informants whenever suspicious activity arises. These efforts are making a tangible difference: IRDNC supports six community conservancies that have Black rhinos. In the last five years, no rhinos were poached in these six conservancies 🦏. • What does entrepreneurship mean in the context of extreme poverty? On #WorldEntrepreneurDay, we're highlighting the resilience and resourcefulness of necessity micro-entrepreneurs. As highlighted in our recent article, over half the workers in low- and middle-income countries are self-employed. For the most part, they run vital micro-enterprises out of necessity, not opportunity. Without much formal education, financial literacy, and minimal access to loans, they may not achieve dramatic growth or disrupt entire industries. Yet they are the engines of stability for their families and communities. Success might mean keeping children in school, paying medical bills, putting food on the table, or employing a neighbor. We are proud to support organizations that empower these micro-entrepreneurs through evidence-based graduation programmes and other social entrepreneurship approaches. • Early Education is the key that unlocks brighter futures Namya Mahajan, Co-Founder of Rocket Learning, recently shared the inspiring story of 8-year-old Maninder Singh – one of 4 million children across India benefitting from Rocket Learning’s innovative approach to early childhood learning. By delivering research-backed educational content through Whatsapp groups, Rocket Learning empowers community-based educators (“Anganwadi”) and parents to ensure that every child reaches their full development potential by age six, regardless of background. Today, they support 17% of India’s Anganwadi educators, with the ambition to reach 50 million children by 2030. Watch Maninder’s inspiring story to see how access to quality early childhood education transforms lives - one child at a time. https://lnkd.in/essBPHMS

    Profil von Namya Mahajan anzeigen

Co-Founder, Rocket Learning. Forbes 30U30, DRK Entrepreneur, Mulago Rainer Fellow. Ex-SEWA, Ex-McKinsey, alum of HBS and Harvard College (Applied Maths and Economics).

8 year old Maninder Singh has been part of my life for the last 5 years. When we started one of Rocket Learning's first pilots, in Chandigarh, in 2020 during the pandemic, Maninder and his parents gave us the confidence that we were onto something. They responded to our content every single day. They loved the smileys they got every week. And his Anganwadi worker would encourage them time and time again. At 3 years old, while his neuronal connections were growing faster than they ever will again, he was learning and trying and growing everyday, with their help. When we invited parents and Anganwadi workers to share what we mean to them, I was so emotional to find that Maninder's proud parents Vandana and Yashpal, and his Anganwadi worker Anjana didi, wanted to be the ones to share. 5 years, 4 million children in 10 states, 540 team members - leading Rocket Learning has been a joy and a challenge. But the real privilege, the privilege of my lifetime, is that Maninder, his community, and communities like his, have shared the last 5 years of their lives with us. I am humbled everyday by their love and trust.

  • With the increasing uncertainty surrounding international aid, NGOs need to explore diverse ways of funding and scaling evidence-based programmes that reduce poverty, improve people’s lives and preserve the environment. Partnerships with government are key to sustaining progress in this scenario of shrinking donor support, as Dianne Calvi and Taddeo Muriuki of Village Enterprise explain in the Stanford Social Innovation Review.   “Rather than creating parallel systems, NGOs need to help governments build capacity so that they can implement and scale programs independently, adapting models in ways that work within governments’ fiscal, institutional and social realities,” they write.   In the article, they share four key priorities for successfully building, nurturing and scaling such government partnerships, based on Village Enterprise’s own experiences with proven "poverty graduation" programmes in Kenya and Rwanda:   - Build government capacity and ownership - Foster local trust - Use results-based funding - Engage in continuous innovation   You can read their illuminating article here: https://lnkd.in/gju8WntJ
