Yesterday, at the Spotlight 2025 Pitch Night at Kraftwerk, we celebrated seven project teams who are shaping the future of water in Switzerland. Under the topic 💧 Drop your solution for a water-wise Switzerland, we came together for our most vital element: a healthy water cycle is the source of life and as we saw: a driver of innovation. We had 7 amazing project teams on stage! And the winners are: 🥇 AlgaeCycle: they turns algae into a circular solution for water and climate. Using natural processes, it cleans wastewater, binds nutrients, and reduces CO₂ – a living example of circular innovation! Arrhenius AG 🥈 The Circular Toilet: reimagines sanitation systems: turning human waste into valuable resources, all without using water. They didn’t just take 2nd place but also won the Audience Award! Kompotoi Schweiz VaLoo ogmo 🥉 Lively Village Streams: strengthens biodiversity right on our doorstep by revitalizing small village streams and bringing local ecosystems back to life. Vincent Grand was part of #ClimaNowSpotlight 2024, where he made his project Living Lands visible for the first time. Since then, he has poured a lot of work and heart into it and has now launched a crowdfunding campaign to build the first prototype. Living Lands aims to make the impact of climate change visible in the Alpine region, starting with the Jungfrau area. We just passed a historic milestone: renewables overtook coal in global electricity generation for the first time. Wind and solar together overtaking ALL fossil fuels in electricity is expected later this year. This is real. It's happening now. Unfortunately, the story of the energy transition reads not only as a victory, it also carries a warning. There's strong momentum in deployment, sure. But we're hitting real political headwinds. Some governments that should be hitting the accelerator are barely moving. Others are in reverse, rolling back progress we fought for. The energy transition can't depend on which party wins the next election. Right now, it does. Here's the thing: the dominant climate narrative that focuses on sacrifice, catastrophe and guilt is not landing. Working-class communities worry about their jobs. Conservatives hear "climate" and think “culture war”. Young people are feeling overwhelmed by doom. Support for climate action is fading, and governments are not taking measures at the scale and pace needed. We need a different narrative, one that connects climate action to people’s sense of security, wellbeing, and independence. Then we need stories that make that narrative real. Stories where people can see themselves in a positive future. Not what we lose, but what we gain: energy we control, jobs that pay well, air our kids can breathe, communities that thrive, technology we lead on. Stories that connect to what people already care about: opportunity, security, their children's futures, places they love. I'm working with Clima Now on this (shout out to Corinne Graessle for starting this important work!). We are collecting examples of climate narratives that work. And we need your help. What examples do you know? I'm curious about: - Messaging that reached different people: conservatives, rural communities, working-class audiences - Policy wins that happened because someone changed how they talked about it - Economic success stories that made people want this transition - Campaigns that built unlikely coalitions - Thought leaders that inspire different audiences I ran into some amazing examples during New York Climate Week: Katharine Hayhoe , who when she found out that climate change threatens the most vulnerable she felt she had to do something because she is an evangelist. And because she is a scientist she became a climate scientist. Benjamin (Benji) Backer, who leads Nature Is Nonpartisan because Climate Change affects us all and Wawa Gatheru, who leads Black Girl Environmentalist, addressing pathway issue for Black girls in the climate sector. Wanted: 15’000 signatures for a climate policy that reduces emissions here in Switzerland! After rallying their community to make the 1400 Swiss glaciers visible, Protect Our Winters Switzerland is going a step further with their campaign "1400 reasons to act". They launched a petition to the Federal Council for effective climate protection as a reaction to the record-high glacier ice losses. Over the past 25 years, more than 40% of Swiss glacier ice has disappeared. The demand is: 🌍 Emissions created in Switzerland must be reduced in Switzerland. We support this initiative because it connects climate action with policy making through community-driven activism, actionable demands and the courage to hold decision-makers accountable. Das ist ein klares Signal – und eine verpasste Chance. 👆 Die Mehrheit der Bevölkerung will Klimaschutz. Das zeigen Umfragen immer wieder deutlich. Aber an der Urne zählt, wie wir ihn positionieren. Klimaschutz wird oft wie ein Zusatz behandelt, der fällt, sobald andere Themen drängen. Dabei ist er die Voraussetzung für alles, was Priorität hat: Versorgungssicherheit, finanzielle Stabilität, Unabhängigkeit. Mit jedem Nein verlängern wir unsere Abhängigkeit von fossilen Rohstoffen. Wer jetzt auf erneuerbare Energien und nachhaltige Geschäftsmodelle setzt, investiert nicht nur „in das Klima“, sondern in eine stabile, unabhängige und zukunftsfähige Schweiz. 🚨 Die Abstimmung ist ein Warnsignal: Wenn wir Mehrheiten gewinnen wollen, müssen wir Klimaschutz als das zeigen, was er ist: die Grundlage für Sicherheit, Wohlstand und Unabhängigkeit. 🚀 Last week, more than 60 participants gathered at ETH Zürich to dive into technologies for Net Zero. As part of CEO4Climate, an initiative by swisscleantech that we support, business leaders came together to stay ahead on the technologies that will shape a climate-neutral future. Through thematic deep dives, participants explored the areas most relevant to their work and strategies (more below). 🌍 The evening created space for valuable exchanges between leaders who are driving climate action forward. A big thank you to swisscleantech for pushing to unlock the full potential of forward-looking climate policy for the Swiss economy.
