“The first dose a child receives often determines the course of their protection. When that first step happens on time, at any facility, it has the power to change everything that follows” - Dr Manoj Kumar Shukul. A new initiative by the Health Department of the Government of Uttar Pradesh, together with the William J. Clinton Foundation (WJCF) and Gavi aims to ensure that every newborn receives essential vaccines within hours of birth and is digitally tracked from day one to ensure follow-up doses aren’t missed. Ghana has officially introduced the HPV vaccine into its national immunisation program, making this life-saving protection against cervical cancer free and accessible to girls across the country. With support from Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, over 2.4 million girls aged 9-14 will be protected from one of the leading causes of death among women in Ghana. "Prevention is better than cure," and this nationwide campaign is proof that when we invest in girls' health, we invest in the future. 🩵

What does it take to reach and protect refugees during a cholera outbreak? Gavi’s Pietro Di Mattei and Ferdinand Abassa visited Chad to find out on a join mission with The Gates Foundation, Dangote Foundation and Alliance partners. The mission followed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of Chad, Gavi, Gates Foundation, Dangote Foundation, UNICEF, World Health Organization and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to support the national immunisation program in 16 priority provinces. The visit was a key opportunity for all partners involved to discuss the operationalisation of this agreement. The delegation conducted a visit to the east of the country to witness the response to a cholera outbreak. Gavi is supporting the Government with funding to provide immunisation services to refugees and supporting the cholera response through a reactive vaccination campaign. The delegations travelled with the Minister of Health to Adre, Ouaddai Province, and conducted a joint visit to one of the refugee camps in Aboutengue where Gavi, in partnership with IRC through the zero-dose immunisation programme, is supporting the Ministry of Health in delivery of essential services to refugees. The joint Alliance mission also conducted a review of the progress and challenges of the ‘Big Catch-Up’ initiative to reverse the decline in childhood vaccination recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic. The objective was to develop an acceleration plan for the remaining months of the initiative until March 2026.
