GESDA - Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator

How can we use #ScienceAnticipation as a tool to make better decisions ? For the first time at the #GESDASummit 2025, we hosted two Anticipation Labs where diplomats, scientists, and leaders explored how science breakthroughs could transform societies, and how cooperation enabled by anticipatory science diplomacy can ensure those transformations benefit all. Through GESDA's Quantum Diplomacy Game and Neurotechnology Diplomacy Game, 60+ participants experienced immersive simulations on quantum technologies and Brain-Computer Interfaces and stepped into the years 2035 and 2045. They took on fictional roles and were invited to imagine, negotiate, and act either on the governance of quantum breakthroughs or on cyber crises involving neural implants. Three key takeaways 🔹Anticipatory Science Diplomacy simulations are engaging invitations to co-shape the future today: Experiencing future scenarios became a vivid call to action 🔹Making science personally relevant: through AI-supported simulations, anticipated scientific breakthroughs felt tangible and relatable, even for those without a scientific background 🔹Democratizing access to science anticipation: the immersive format opened space for inclusive dialogue, making complex science and governance challenges approachable for everyone. Our third Anticipatory Leadership Week is underway in Istanbul with Sabanci University! The Anticipatory Leadership Summit opened Monday - Türkiye’s first gathering of researchers, diplomats, policymakers, and business leaders across energy, health, finance, and tech to prepare for the next 5, 10, 25 years by linking emerging science and technology with the skills and mindset needed to lead through uncertainty and change. 🔹 Introducing GESDA, Stéphane Decoutère presented the GESDA Science Breakthrough Radar® Pulse of Impact, showing how science anticipation can inform long-term strategic planning and innovation in the private sector. He emphasized how GESDA’s Radar aligns with Sabanci University’s forward-looking research agenda - from quantum computing, AI-enabled manufacturing, and semiconductor technologies to the circular economy, biosecurity, and the future of energy. 🔹Marga Gual Soler, PhD introduced GESDA’s approach to Anticipatory Science Diplomacy, emphasizing the growing role for the business and defense sectors in science diplomacy and the shifting geopolitical dynamics requiring new multi-stakeholder frameworks for governance and action, exemplified by the case of OQI – Open Quantum Institute Institute. 🔹GESDA’s Chair of the Diplomacy Forum Enrico Letta captured the spirit of the moment: “Istanbul is uniquely positioned as a bridge between Europe, Asia, and Africa - and Sabancı University, thanks to its distinctive model of academic–industry integration, can instill an anticipatory mindset and scientific literacy across sectors, particularly in the private sector.” This week marks GESDA’s first major initiative in Türkiye, hosted by Sabancı University under the leadership of Founding Chair Güler Sabancı and President Yusuf Leblebici and the incredible team at Sabancı University Executive Development Unit (EDU) Ezgi Akpinar Ozge Ozkan Fatos Aksel Elif Aktas Bayrak Ece Ackerman. 🌍 Sommet GESDA 2025: anticiper pour le bien de l’humanité Durant ces trois derniers jours, le canton de Genève a réuni scientifiques, diplomates, décideurs et jeunes générations pour explorer les révolutions technologiques qui transforment notre monde. 🔬 IA, interfaces cerveau-machine, informatique quantique, biologie synthétique... Youth for Science Anticipation At this year #GESDASummit, we hosted a cohort of 20 Emerging Future Leaders who joined us from the Geneva Graduate Institute, The Villars Institute, foraus - Swiss Forum on Foreign Policy, Yale University, and the hackathon winners of the OQI – Open Quantum Institute. In a dedicated workshop, the cohort explored visions of possible futures, examined the scientific breakthroughs and technologies driving them, and discussed recommendations for action aimed at policymakers, scientists, and citizens alike. Some key takeaways 🔹Integrating ethical questions and psychological dimensions into discussions on emerging science and technology 🔹Actively engaging in democratic processes 🔹Embracing scientific and technological optimism, while maintaining critical reflection and responsibility. 👀 A sneak peek into GESDA’s art exhibition “When Science Meets Imagination: Exploring the Future Through Art” At the #GESDASummit, we placed artistic perspectives at the core of science diplomacy. Through the pilot initiative “Culture as a Lens for Science”, artists and scientists come together to explore how creativity can illuminate complex scientific frontiers, making the future more tangible, emotional, and shared. Hosted at the Globe of Science and Innovation at CERN, the exhibition features four remarkable works - spanning quantum computing, digital well-being, and ecological memory - alongside a selection of public AI-generated visions of the future from the Swiss Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka: 🔹 “Manchar Ecological Decline” by Muhammad Bux Mangi (Pakistan), a poetic, data-driven reflection on the ecological collapse of Manchar Lake. 🔹 “Our Bodies Remain Online” by Rabbiya Farooq (Pakistan), an audiovisual exploration of how digital habits shape our physiology and emotions. 🔹 “Quantum Babylon” by ROMAN LIPSKI (Germany), a visually striking meditation on quantum ethics, beauty, and imagination. 🔹 “Qubits on the Bloch” by Dr. Maria (Marilena) Longobardi & Dr. Marie Le Dantech (Switzerland), where quantum research meets artistic interpretation.   As Mae Jeminson, American engineer, physician, and former NASA astronaut, puts it: "The difference between science and the arts is not that they are different sides of the same coin… or even different parts of the same continuum, but rather, they are manifestations of the same thing.
