📍 Africa | "The humanitarian consequences are truly dramatic, because we have some 35 million people displaced due to these conflicts in African countries, and this represents almost half of the displaced people in the world", Gilles Carbonnier, ICRC's vice-president, about the armed conflicts in the continent and their devastating consequences on civilians. Info
Established in 1863, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian help for people affected by conflict and armed violence and to promote the laws that protect victims of war. An independent and neutral organization, its mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. It takes action in response to emergencies and promotes respect for international humanitarian law and its implementation in national law. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. For six decades, the Fundamental Principles have enabled aid to cross frontlines and hope to reach despair. But today's climate puts them under extraordinary strain. Read (and listen) this text written by Pierre Krähenbühl, our Director General, on why the Fundamental Principles must be lived, and not just remembered 👉🏽 http://ms.spr.ly/6047sh0hH

In eastern DR Congo, with medicine supplies exhausted and 40% fewer health workers, the sick and wounded, many injured by armed violence, face a harsh reality: they cannot receive the care they need. We call for urgent action to ensure the continued functioning of healthcare services, the delivery of medical supplies, the safe transfer of patients, and the protection of healthcare staff and infrastructure.

In today’s conflicts, the protective purpose of IHL is being tested like never before. The Fourth Geneva Convention, applicable during international armed conflicts, covers critical issues such as hostage-taking, occupation, and humanitarian access, among others. The ICRC’s updated Commentary on the Fourth Geneva Convention reaffirms this protective purpose, offering clarity and authority to ensure the law safeguards civilians rather than justifying harm. Read the updated Commentary here: http://ms.spr.ly/6044sCgKk Cordula Droege, ICRC's chief legal officer, shares more 👇🏽
