A new study published in the Open Access journal Pharmaceutics MDPI shows that the diabetes medication semaglutide, also know as Ozempic, has therapeutic potential for protection against vision loss in people with diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy is a condition caused by high blood pressure in people with diabetes, and can lead to sight loss. Research published by researchers from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens shows that semaglutide, a class of medication used for treatment of diabetes, can induce cell regeneration and promote wound healing in skin and eye cells. This was illustrated through the significant reduction of cell death in cells treated with semaglutide, and activation of signalling pathways involved in wound healing and tissue repair. The results highlight the potential for further application for this class of medication in treating vision loss caused by diabetes, as well as diabetic foot ulcers. 💡 MDPI Spain was delighted to host the Madrid Editors Salon 2025, an inspiring gathering of Editorial Board Members in the heart of Spain. Supported by our MDPI Barcelona team, the event brought together 30 EBMs from leading institutions, including Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Universidad de Alcalá, UNED, @Hospital Universitario de la Princesa, and CSIC. The Salon offered a valuable space to exchange ideas, discuss the future of scholarly publishing, and explore how MDPI can better support Spanish researchers. Our speakers — Marta Colomer Lluch, Enric Sayas Montanyana, and Clàudia Aunós — shared insights on MDPI’s latest achievements, the role of AI in publishing, and how we champion open science through collaboration. A lively roundtable and interactive sessions encouraged dialogue on editorial workflows, communication, and research integrity, reinforcing MDPI’s commitment to editorial excellence and open access. A heartfelt thank-you to all editors, speakers, and participants who made this event a success. We look forward to continuing the conversation and building a stronger, more connected scientific community in Spain and beyond.
