On Sunday, 26 October, ETH Zürich welcomed curious minds of all ages to the first Sunday of Autumn 2025 edition, packed with fascinating talks, kids’ workshops, guided tours, demos, and a Physics Show. A huge thank you to everyone who made the day such a success: our speakers, volunteers, demo and tour teams, and the many visitors who filled ETH Hönggerberg with curiosity and energy! In the lectures, experts and scientists including Prof. Christian Schaffner, Leonard Schliesser, Prof. Birgit Kleim, Prof. Florian Dorfler, Bernd Rinn shed light on the complex challenges and innovations shaping our energy transition. Young explorers got hands-on in the kids’ workshops, discovering static electricity, potato power, and the secrets of the “Magic Cube.” Interactive demos and exhibitions by Energy Science Center, ETH Zurich, ETH-Spin-off Unbound Potential, Grid2050 from the NCCR Automation, and other ETH teams showcased the technologies and ideas powering our sustainable energy future. And the spectacular Physics Show by Prof. Daniela Rupp brought the concept of energy vividly to life for the whole family. What if trees could tell us how mountains move? In our latest ETH Ambassadors Blog, ETH Zürich mathematics student Lorenz Hübel takes us on his journey from equations to evergreens, turning trees into natural sensors for detecting slope movements. During his internship at SLF Davos, he explored how tree rings reveal centuries of geological change, combining data science with environmental research. From mudflows to mountain hikes, Lorenz shares what it’s like to bring mathematical models to life in the Swiss Alps and how curiosity can take you far beyond the classroom.
