❗️Aid workers in Tawila fear conditions in the region will deteriorate as more internally displaced persons arrive from el-Fasher and food and medical supplies continue to dwindle. “The conditions are catastrophic, as we’ve been hearing,” Mary Brace, technical protection advisor for Nonviolent Peaceforce, told Al Jazeera. “The conflict is ongoing, and there is no guarantee of safe passage for #civilians as they try to come towards Tawila.” Aid workers’ immediate concerns are providing those fleeing #ElFasher with food, water and emergency medical attention. “The last months have been absolutely harrowing,” Brace told Al Jazeera. “People were talking about just the extreme fear of constant bombardment. The numbers of displaced people here, it’s just absolutely astounding. There’s just extreme levels of trauma.” #Sudan #Darfur #KeepEyesOnSudan https://bit.ly/3JxoAbs

Transforming the world's response to conflict.
Info
Iraq, Myanmar, Sudan, South Sudan, Thailand, Philippines, US, Ukraine | HQ in Geneva Our Mission Nonviolent Peaceforce is a global civil society organization. We protect civilians in violent conflicts through unarmed strategies. We build peace side by side with local communities. We advocate for the wider adoption of these approaches to safeguard human lives and dignity. Our Vision We envision a world in which large-scale unarmed civilian peacekeeping using proven nonviolent strategies is recognized as a viable alternative in preventing, addressing, and mitigating violent conflicts worldwide. Our primary strategy for achieving this vision is the creation of space to foster dialogue. Our Work We most often respond to invitations by credible local organizations committed to nonviolent solutions. Once invited, we meet key players, including commanders from opposing sides, local police, religious, business, and civil society leaders. We live and work in communities within conflict zones alongside local people. When violence erupts, civilians under threat often contact us. They know and trust us. We have been living among them. Visibly nonpartisan and unarmed, we arrive in NP uniforms, with NP vehicles, letting our presence be known. Our activities have ranged from entering active conflict zones to remove civilians in the crossfire to providing opposing factions a safe space to negotiate. Other activities include serving as a communication link between warring factions, securing safe temporary housing for civilians displaced by war, and providing violence prevention measures during elections.

🌐 Unarmed Civilian Protection (UCP) is often perceived as a short-term or temporary intervention, while #peacebuilding is seen as a slow and structural process. But, this binary overlooks the ways in which #UCP can deliver immediate results while also supporting long-term goals such as enhancing civilian safety, enabling participation, and creating the space needed for #sustainable peacebuilding to take root. 🆕 Our latest briefing reveals what this looks like on the ground, using examples from our programmes in #Ukraine, the #Philippines, and #South Sudan. As a #CommunityLed approach to protection, UCP interrupts immediate and emerging violence while simultaneously strengthening the foundations for long-term #peace and safety. ✅ Put simply, UCP creates opportunities for peacebuilding amid crisis. 🗣️ "At this point, we’re really concerned about how global pressure can be applied to ensure that hostilities cease and allow people to safely escape from areas where violence is taking place, and for #humanitarian actors to respond to the needs of those arriving in safer areas." -Nic Pyatt, Interim Country Director for Sudan In an interview with Deutsche Welle, Nic discusses more about NP's response efforts in #Sudan and why critical action is needed. #KeepEyesOnSudan #Darfur Watch or read the full interview: https://bit.ly/4qE8rlj

🇮🇶 Barriers rooted in conflict legacies and structural discrimination continue to limit the role of women in #Iraq. Drawing on observations and findings from NP's work in Ninewa, our latest brief explores how women’s roles are shaped and constrained in practice, while also identifying spaces where their leadership is already driving protection and #peacebuilding. 🆕 To ensure that national commitments under the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda translate into tangible outcomes on the ground, our team in Iraq has put together recommendations for strengthening women’s role in #peace and #security. One year ago, the Charitable Organization Relief Coordination Centre, together with Nonviolent Peaceforce, launched the STEEL project aimed at enhancing the capacity of experienced volunteers to conduct evacuation missions from frontline territories. This involved training in tactical medicine, mine safety, and defensive driving, as well as in early warning systems, international humanitarian law, small-drone awareness, and countermeasures. The teams were also provided with armored vehicles, which increases the safety of both those performing the evacuations and those being evacuated. STEEL today is not just numbers. Behind them are real human lives: Missions conducted: 193 People evacuated: 1,083 Kharkiv region — 435 Donetsk region — 241 Dnipropetrovsk region — 323 Sumy region — 84 Among the evacuated were people with limited mobility: 140 The publication are implemented with the financial support of the Representative Office of Nonviolent Peaceforce International in Ukraine under the project “STEEL — Safe Transport for Evacuation and Emergency Logistics & Public Development Center.” This project includes the following organizations as equal consortium members: CO CF Unity and Strength; CO CF Haystov; NGO Free Movement Kharkiv; CO CF The Way of Ukraine; NGO Base UA; CO Relief Coordination Centre.
