rethinking, rebuilding, regenerating coral reefs

Info

We rebuild coral reefs. Sustainably. Scientifically. With artistic vision. Our innovative, modular structures are designed to restore and promote reef life and serve as coastal protection barriers. Our reefs recreate the lost 3D-framework of a damaged reef, restoring reef ecosystem services such as fish stocks, tourism, biodiversity, and coastal protection. We achieve this goal by combining artistic vision with scientific rigor, and the newest 3D printing technologies.

After a short delay due to the recent earthquakes in the Philippines, we’re excited to share that our Reef Regeneration Leader Workshop is now underway 🥳 As you read this, 12 participants, from Mati, Mindanao and beyond are taking part in hands-on training to learn how to build, install, and care for our modular reef structures 🧱🪸 The first part of the workshop focused on theory, providing the essential fundamentals of reef regeneration. This was followed by practical sessions on land and in the ocean, where participants put their learning into action and developed the skills needed to become the reef builders of tomorrow across the Philippines. The workshop is designed to equip our local team with both theoretical and practical knowledge in reef regeneration. Together, we’re not just building reefs, but a legacy to protect marine ecosystems for generations to come 🌊🙌 #rrreefs #coralreef #marineconservation #marinelife #biodiversity #sustainability #OceanDecade #3Dprinting

𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝟱𝘁𝗵 𝗯𝗶𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗿𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗳𝘀! 🎈 It’s hard to believe that our journey began five years ago with an idea at ETH Zürich from Marie and Ulrike to blend science and art to regenerate degraded coral reef structures. So much has happened since then. 🪸 five reef projects across the globe  🚀 our team has grown with our first employees now being hired in the Philippines 📈 transitioned from an association to a for-profit startup 🖥️ moved into our first office(s) 🧰 extensive testing of our bricks 🧱 established a local 3D-printing production facility in the Philippines 💰 first investment round closed Throughout this journey, we’ve never lost our passion or the joy of doing what we love – giving corals a new home and helping them survive this century. A huge thank you to everyone – our community, partners, volunteers, advisors, and investors – who has been part of this adventure and supported us along the way. Here’s to many more years of #rethinking, #rebuilding, #regenerating coral reefs! Hanna Kuhfuss Josephine Graf Mauro Bischoff Julia Spaet Tim Day

Celebrating 4 years of El Castillo 🧱🪸 Four years ago, we completed the construction of El Castillo, our first modular reef structure built from 228 3D-printed clay bricks off the coast of San Andrés Island, Colombia. This prototype reef was assembled in just 10 days with the support of 11 workshop participants, our local partner Corales de Paz - Buceo con Propósito, and dedicated community members who believed in the vision of regenerating life beneath the surface. Since then, El Castillo has become more than a structure, it’s a living example of reef regeneration in action. Over the past four years, our scientific monitoring has followed baby corals growth, schools of fish returning, and nature slowly reclaiming what was once lost. Like many reefs around the world, El Castillo faced challenges during the 2023 marine heatwave, which caused widespread coral bleaching and mortality across the Caribbean. Yet, when we returned this year, we were met with an incredible sight: new coral recruits thriving inside the structure, and an abundance of marine life 🐠🐙🦐 This milestone is not only a celebration of four years of El Castillo, but also a testament to nature’s resilience, and to what’s possible when innovation, collaboration, and hope come together beneath the waves 🌊 A heartfelt thank you to our partners, volunteers, and the community of San Andrés for their ongoing dedication. Together, we’re proving that regeneration is possible, one reef at a time. rrreefs #rrreefs #3Dprinting #coralreef #marineconservation #marinelife #biodiversity #sustainability #Oceandecade

𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘄𝗮𝘆, 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗳𝘀 The Global Tipping Points report, with contributions from 160 scientists, reveals that the estimated thermal tipping point for warm-water coral reefs – at 1.2°C of global warming – has been crossed. From 2023 to 2025, coral reefs experienced the worst #bleaching event on record, resulting in massive coral mortality. 🌡️🌊🪸 Global warming is on track to soon exceed 1.5°C. Since the upper threshold for coral reefs is at 1.5°C, there is a +99% probability that reefs will tip — even under the most optimistic scenario of stabilizing the climate at 1.5°C. This makes coral reefs the Earth’s first climate #TippingPoint, signaling irreversible planetary change. The report emphasizes that tipping points, including the loss of polar ice and the Amazon rainforest, are approaching faster than previously thought. We are now in a “new reality,” putting biodiversity – and humanity – in the danger zone. While the outlook for coral reefs is bleak, the report also highlights the urgent need for #conservation, the reduction of non-climatic stressors, and improved reef management. Mike Barrett, chief scientific adviser at WWF-UK and co-author of the report: “This demonstrates that conservation of reefs is now more critical than ever. The game has changed and the response has to be really urgent.” At rrreefs, our mission is to regenerate degraded reef areas, providing corals more time to adapt and slow down the decline of coral reefs. We are never giving up on coral reefs –  because they are vital to our planet’s future! 🌏 👉 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲: https://lnkd.in/eYrfPCAD #CoralReefs #ClimateChange #ClimateAction #Ocean #SDG14 #OceanDecade #ReefRegeneration

We’re thrilled to share one of our proudest achievements yet, the launch of the Philippines’ first Artificial Coral Reef Production Facility, created in partnership with Davao Oriental State University (DOrSU) in Mati 🥳 This pioneering facility has now produced its first 3D-printed clay reef bricks, marking a breakthrough in #coralreef regeneration and sustainable community development. Together, we’re combining science, technology, and local knowledge to create tangible solutions for the ocean 🧱🧱 The project brings together students, researchers, and local fisherfolk, equipping them with new skills in reef production, 3D printing, and marine regeneration. Earlier this month, our technology partner WASP delivered hands-on training to the DOrSU team, ensuring both students and community members are fully prepared to lead reef brick production independently. Made from locally sourced clay, each brick is designed to become a thriving home for corals and fish, helping restore biodiversity and strengthen coastal resilience 🪸🐠 Building on our proven success in Pujada Bay, this facility represents a major step toward locally produced, ecologically adapted reef modules, a powerful example of what collaboration can achieve. Over the next month, we’ll be sharing more stories from the Philippines, starting with our upcoming reef-building workshop next week. As always, we’d love to hear from you, please reach out if you’d like to learn more about this project or explore how your business can get involved. A heartfelt thank you to our incredible partners and the local communities whose dedication and belief made this milestone possible 🫶 #rrreefs rrreefs #3Dprinting #coralreef #marineconservation #marinelife #biodiversity #sustainability #Oceandecade

Fish are among the first species to return to our modular clay reefs, and their comeback has been faster and more diverse than expected. Across all our sites, we’re seeing thriving fish populations that show how quickly marine habitats can recover when given the right foundation 🧱🧱 Scientific monitoring lies at the heart of every rrreefs project. Together with our local partners, we conduct regular underwater surveys to understand how fish communities are evolving over time. From small reef dwellers to larger species that indicate ecosystem balance, our data shows that regenerated reefs can attract and sustain vibrant marine life in just a matter of months 🪸🐠 What is your favourite marine fish and why? A milestone worth celebrating with our partners at Melitta Group 🧱🪸🐠 Since August 2024, we’ve been working together on our first reef regeneration project in Ecuador’s Machalilla National Park, one of the country’s largest marine protected areas. With the support of #Melitta and our local partner Conservación Marina Ecuador (CONMAR), we’ve restored 25 m² of degraded #coralreef using our modular clay system, while also engaging local communities in the process. Early monitoring by Andrea Castillo Higgins and her team at CONMAR already shows encouraging signs: coral settlement is taking hold and fish populations are on the rise. These early results show not just immediate ecological recovery, but also the potential for large-scale regeneration across the region. A huge thank you to the #MelittaGroup for your continued support and belief in our mission from day one, we’re proud of what we’ve achieved together so far and excited for what’s to come over the next two years of partnership💙 rrreefs #rrreefs #marineconservation #marinelife #biodiversity #sustainability

***   🌊 A refuge for octopuses and other creatures Just over a year ago, we collaborated with Swiss start-up rrreefs to install an artificial coral reef off the coast of Ecuador—the first initiative of its kind in the Eastern Pacific. The results after 12 months are impressive: ✅ Fish diversity at the artificial reef is higher than at comparable locations. ✅ Corals of the endangered Pocillopora genus have settled there. ✅ The reef serves as a refuge for octopuses and other marine life. ✅ The local community benefits from sustainable tourism. We are particularly proud of our close collaboration with the fishermen of the Los Ciriales community and our partner CONMAR. Not only were they involved in the installation, but they also monitor the reef on an ongoing basis. In a region where 70% of coral reefs have been lost in recent decades, our project shows how businesses, science, and local communities can work together to protect the oceans.
