🇮🇳 India is harnessing technology to improve resilience. On October 13th – the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction – two state-of-the-art High Performance Computing (HPC) systems were inaugurated at meteorology and forecasting centres in the country. 💻 This marks a significant improvement in Global South meteorological computing capacities - and forms part of the shift to a new paradigm where investment in data and technology is central to disaster risk reduction. In this article for the #DRRvoices blog, Dr. Sanjay K. Srivastava – former Chief of Disaster Risk Reduction at United Nations ESCAP – explains the significance of India's shift in investment from reactive disaster management to an anticipatory governance model. 💰 Read more about how India is using tech to fund resilience 👉 https://ow.ly/z0bq50XiiO6 #ResiliencePays

Can we escape a future of worsening climate disasters? 🌪️ A future of devastating cyclones, droughts, heatwaves and floods isn't set in stone. We can change the story by investing in resilience, clean energy and early warning systems. 📢 💡Understanding climate risks today gives us power to protect people, economies and the planet tomorrow. Tsunamis are a hazard with global impacts, and so we must take a global approach to tackle tsunami risk. Yesterday I was honoured to join an event hosted by the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations in Geneva, commemorating the 10th World Tsunami Awareness Day, which is marked each year on 5 November. The event was well attended by representatives of more than 70 Member States and 13 UN agencies – an encouraging demonstration of the spirit of global cooperation we need to harness in order to reduce tsunami risks. While tsunamis are infrequent events, their destructive power is enormous – as was seen when the Indian Ocean Tsunami struck in 2004, resulting in one of the most deadly disasters in living memory. But we can reduce the impacts of tsunamis by joining forces to invest in readiness, and we need to commit to building on the considerable progress made over the past 20 years. My sincere thanks to Ambassador Atsuyuki Oike and the Permanent Mission of Japan for hosting the event, and to the other speakers and attendees for joining in and helping to raise tsunami awareness.

🌿 Mangroves can offer natural flood barriers with billion-dollar benefits. A new study led by the UCSC Center for Coastal Climate Resilience and East Carolina University (ECU), in collaboration with Moody’s RMS has quantified how much mangroves protect coastal communities: 📊 During Hurricanes Irma (2017) and Ian (2022), mangroves in Florida reduced storm surge damages by an estimated $725 million and $4.1 billion, respectively. 🏡 In Collier County, they provide around $67 million in storm surge protection every year. 🌊 However, homes built in front of mangrove forests may face higher damages — a reminder that local planning and natural defences must work hand in hand. This study used industry catastrophe-risk models to value mangrove protection – a first! – showing how ecosystem services can be priced with the same rigour as engineered infrastructure. ➡️ https://ow.ly/83wC50Xib4A #NatureBasedSolutions

Climate change implies changes in weather and climate phenomena across all timescales: more intense precipitation and droughts, more extreme temperatures, and stronger exchanges between the poles and the tropics . Hence, changes in the climate variables normally observed during the occurrence of weather and climate phenomena are expected as a result, but the exact moment when such changes will manifest is uncertain. Only by developing current capacities in monitoring and prediction, as well as in associated mechanisms in the DRR value chain, can there be improvements in managing climate risk. 💡Learn more in the Technical Guidance on Application of Climate Information for Comprehensive Risk Management, from UNDRR and WMO, which provides the necessary know-how to develop and strengthen a policy basis for DRR and risk-informed development ➡️ https://ow.ly/PjSq50XihyC

What if your social posts could trigger an emergency response? 📱🆘 Speaking to UNDRR at #GP2025, Nashin Mahtani, Director of the Yayasan Peta Bencana [Disaster Map Foundation] explained how the real-time mapping platform can transform social media posts into actionable disaster intelligence. 🌪️🌊 During emergencies, people post on Twitter, WhatsApp, Facebook, and other platforms—but that data is often lost in the noise. The Disaster Map AI chatbot detects keywords like 'flood' or 'earthquake', verifies posts, and guides users to submit live, geotagged reports. The result? Public, real-time disaster mapping to help responders and communities make faster, better decisions. 🔁 This is what innovation looks like when lives are at stake! Dig deep in Nashin's #DRRvoices blog post, on #PreventionWeb➡️ https://ow.ly/kb7y50XihIa #GPDRR2025 #ActForResilienceToday

⚠️ Hurricane Melissa has intensified to Category 5 strength, with severe impacts increasingly likely for Jamaica. At 5 a.m. EDT Monday, the US National Hurricane Center upgraded Melissa to Category 5, with top sustained winds of 160 mph. Forecasts indicate Melissa could become the most powerful hurricane ever to make landfall in Jamaica, bringing life-threatening winds and storm surges by early Tuesday. In a warming world, extreme tropical cyclones like Melissa are becoming common: ⛈️ Wetter – warmer air holds more moisture, increasing flood risks 🐢 Slower – storms linger longer, prolonging exposure to hazards 🌪️ More intense – rapid strengthening leaves less time to prepare Adapting to this new reality is essential to protect lives and livelihoods. More on Hurricane Melissa's intensification ➡️ https://ow.ly/UE4L50Xifwk

🌍 The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030 is the global roadmap for making our communities safer and more resilient. As the United Nations system’s lead agency for disaster risk reduction, UNDRR coordinates efforts to turn this vision into action — supporting countries and partners to reduce risk, prevent losses, and strengthen resilience. 📍 Through our regional offices and partnerships with governments, civil society and the private sector, we guide the implementation, follow-up and review of the Sendai Framework across all regions. The Framework sets out seven global targets for 2030: 🎯 A — Reduce disaster mortality ⬇️ 🎯 B — Reduce the number of affected people ⬇️ 🎯 C — Reduce economic losses relative to global GDP ⬇️ 🎯 D — Reduce damage to critical infrastructure and disruption of basic services ⬇️ 🎯 E — Increase the number of countries with DRR strategies ⬆️ 🎯 F — Strengthen international cooperation for DRR ⬆️ 🎯 G — Increase access to multi-hazard early warning systems and risk information ⬆️ Together, these goals aim for one shared outcome: 💪 a substantial reduction of disaster risk and losses in lives, livelihoods, health, and assets worldwide.
