*Industry Observation – Dr. Athula Balasuriya* *Subjectivity in Colour Assessment & The Case for Digital Transformation* Colour remains one of the most *subjective parameters* in the textile and apparel industry—even as we approach the end of 2025. Despite advancements in technology, we still largely depend on *human eye judgment*, which introduces variability. In practice, we often see that a colour may *fail at the beginning of the week* and *pass by the end*, with no actual difference in shade—just differing human perception. Why haven’t we transitioned to *digital colour reading solutions* yet? With today’s technology, we can even envision *mobile phone apps* that read and compare colours under standardized light sources. This would bring consistency, eliminate bias, and allow: - Faster decision-making - Reduced resource wastage - Optimized manpower deployment - Better alignment with consumer expectations Ultimately, *quality is the consumer’s judgment*. If we streamline this subjective process with objective digital tools, the *end benefit goes to the customer and the industry as a whole becomes more efficient.

When a tariff changes, it’s never just numbers on a government sheet. It’s a ripple. The recent USA tariff revision may look like a small percentage change to some, but for the export industry, especially in textiles, it’s a shift in the ground we stand on. Margins that were already under pressure are now tighter. Buyers start to hesitate, renegotiate, or move orders elsewhere. For smaller exporters, that hesitation can mean the difference between keeping the lights on or shutting a unit down. The real cost isn’t just in the percentage printed in the notification. It’s in the uncertainty it creates, buyers delaying orders, manufacturers holding back on raw material purchases, teams unsure how to plan the next quarter. Export has always been a long game. You invest months before you see a dollar. Tariff changes can disrupt that cycle in a day. The irony is, manufacturers can’t control the policy. We can only adapt. And those who adapt fastest, by diversifying markets, rethinking product mixes, and tightening operations are the ones who survive these shifts. It’s not the first time we’ve had to navigate this. It won’t be the last. In fact, we’ve been navigating shifts like this, quietly, persistently, for the past 5 years (Covid). Be patient, watch out for the next big opportunity, control the costs and internal controls and look out for customers who are looking for good quality products rather than one looking for a bargain.
