🔬Cancer research: a CHF 1,4 million grant from Fondation Leenaards🇨🇭. Three Swiss researchers from EPFL, Université de Genève and HUG - Hôpitaux Universitaires de Genève are pioneering a groundbreaking strategy to overcome #immunotherapy resistance by targeting #cancer cells' physical properties rather than their biology. The goal: make their membranes stiffer, hence making it possible for T-cells to bind to tumors and destroy them. We are proud to announce that two Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) projects and one BRIDGE programme proposal have been approved — driving forward innovation and translational science at the intersection of medicine, engineering, and data science. 🔹 SNSF Project "Data-Driven Surgical Training with Multi-Modal Digital Twins", Prof. Philipp Fürnstahl, Prof. Mazda Farshad, Prof. Siyu Tang🔹 State-of-the-art VR surgical training tools have great potential for personalized, skill-based learning. This project takes a data-driven approach to surgical education, building digital twins that extend current VR surgical training frameworks with realistic tool-tissue interaction, human behavior, and acoustic signals to recreate complex interventional environments. The framework aims to bridge the gap between simulation and real-world patient treatment to improve the training experience for the surgeons of tomorrow. 🔹 SNSF Project "Under the Skin: Unraveling the Neuromodulatory Role of Skin Cells in Complex Regional Pain Syndrome", Prof. Stefan Dudli, Prof. Florian Brunner, Prof. Michèle Hubli, Prof. Sibylle Grad🔹 This interdisciplinary project investigates the role of skin cells in modulating pain in Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). By creating the first single-cell atlas of CRPS-affected skin, the team aims to uncover biological subgroups, identify novel cell-based biomarkers, and lay the foundation for precision medicine in chronic pain. The findings could redefine CRPS as a neuro-immuno-cutaneous condition and open new therapeutic avenues for pain and inflammation disorders. 🔹 BRIDGE Project "Robotic and Minimally Invasive Laser Tissue Soldering", Dr. Oscar Cipolato, Prof. Inge Herrmann🔹 This project pioneers iSoldering, an intelligent tissue closure platform for robotic and minimally invasive surgery. Combining laser-activated bonding with real-time temperature feedback, it offers a safer, more precise, and efficient alternative to conventional sutures and adhesives, enhancing healing and surgical precision while reducing complications.
