Mental health – the too often missing piece in emergency responses In disaster zones, we rush to provide food, water, and shelter. But what about the invisible wounds? In her latest op-ed for Euractiv, our Head of Crisis Response, Advocacy and Communications, Manon Parmentier, highlights why Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) must be recognized as a core pillar of humanitarian response. And this is why we have entered a multi-year collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross - ICRC to support and extend mental health in emergencies. From conflict zones to climate disasters, untreated trauma can ripple through communities, weakening recovery and resilience. It is time to close the gap between awareness and action. 📖 Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/eTDa9GnW #MentalHealth #DisasterResponse #MHPSS

Creativity, community, and climate innovation are reshaping life for those living on the frontlines of climate disruption. In Milan, where summer temperatures soar to 38°C, daily life, especially for children, can become very challenging. But parents, city planners, and schoolchildren came together to transform a schoolyard into a green oasis and vibrant community space. The challenges are real, but so are the solutions. With every schoolyard turned into a cooling refuge, every mangrove nursery restored to shield coastlines, and every household prepared for the next flood, resilience becomes reality. The October 2024 DANA floods were among the most devastating in Spain’s recent history. The Post-Event Review Capability (PERC) in Valencia shows us that resilience is not a top-down concept, it’s built from the ground up. Local communities, authorities, and support systems are not just stakeholders; they are co-creators of solutions. When we listen, engage, and act together, we move beyond recovery and towards lasting resilience. 📘 What is PERC? The PERC is a methodology developed by Zurich Insurance Group, the Z Zurich Foundation, and several partner organizations. It helps analyze the impacts of extreme events and identify actionable lessons to strengthen climate resilience. Imagine having to leave school at 15, with no way to return. In parts of India, this is a reality. But something extraordinary is happening. Girls forced to stop their education are now studying again. They didn't just return to class, they came back as leaders, turning rundown buildings into training centers, building playgrounds, and influencing government policy. This story is a new beginning, led by girls with the courage to never give up. Balika Shivir Centers are a collaboration between Plan_India and the Z Zurich Foundation

Mental wellbeing is part of all our lives. Across the globe, new efforts are expanding access to mental health support for young people - through school-based programs, caregiver training, and community-led initiatives. Today, we’re excited to share a new video from our 'Thriving Together' partnership with UNICEF. It highlights the powerful role of caregivers in supporting youth mental wellbeing. Connection and empathy go a long way in helping young people feel seen, heard, and supported. 'Thriving Together' is embedding mental health and wellbeing into everyday environments to build lasting support systems for young people. Our goal is to impact at least 11 million people across 15 countries by 2027. Together we can change the story and give mental wellbeing the attention and action it truly needs. Will you be part of the next chapter? Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/evsxWX59 #WorldMentalHealthDay #ThrivingTogether

Where there’s a map, there’s a way - The Nordic Mapathon Sometimes, the most powerful way to help is by putting a place on the map. That’s what 84 Zurich Insurance Nordic employees did during the Mapathon - a hybrid volunteering event hosted from Helsinki to support Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). Teams from across the region came together, using their skills for an important mission: to map remote areas in Chad that are invisible on most maps, yet home to people facing real emergencies. The day began with a powerful presentation from MSF, highlighting the critical role of accurate maps in their life-saving work, “The climate crisis is a health crisis.” Rising temperatures, extreme weather, and displacement aren’t just environmental issues, they are also medical emergencies. Volunteers mapped over 35 square kilometers of terrain - transforming blank spaces into navigable landscapes that will be used to reach communities in need. It was a day of practical action, but also of deep connection. "I am incredibly proud of the 84 Zurich Nordic colleagues who volunteered their time to map remote areas of Chad. Their efforts are directly supporting Doctors Without Borders in reaching vulnerable communities faster and more effectively. This impact was driven by compassion, teamwork and a shared commitment to creating a brighter future together", says Mattias Fritz, CEO Zurich Nordic. The Mapathon wasn’t just about data. It was about connection - between colleagues, across borders, and with communities we may never meet, but whose lives we can still impact. #Volunteering #CrisisResponse
