- In der Heraldik zählt die weißgraue (graue) bis himmelblaue Eisenfarbe, auch Stahlfarbe, zu den unklassischen Farben, die erst später als unedles Metall den heraldischen Tinkturen zugeordnet wurde. Die heraldische Schraffur für die Darstellung der Eisenfarbe bei monochromen Bildern von Wappen ist nicht ganz eindeutig. Ersteres Muster besteht aus enganliegenden, von rechts und von links diagonal verlaufenden Strichen. Zweiteres Schraffurmuster ist das international verbreitetere, mit gestrichelten senkrechten und gestrichelten waagerechten Linien. Es wird meist mit einem dunkleren Grau interpretiert. (de)

A rare British example is the arms of Uplawmoor Primary School (Public Register vol 81, p 62): Tierced per pale: first, cendree and second gules over all a bell tower per pale argent and cendree, the bell counterchanged; third per pale argent and cendree, a square tower counterchanged; a base tierced per pale, first gules, second argent a book expanded cendree, third per bend gules and cendree three edock leaves conjoined at the stalk in triangle, one in bend, and two in bend sinister argent.

È raro nell'araldica anglosassone, ma è comune in Germania e frequente in Francia. In Italia è a volte sostituito dal campo di cielo. Un raro esempio britannico di stemma che presenta il colore cenerino è quello della Scuola Elementare di Uplawmoor.
