Nejvyšší bod průsmyku leží v nadmořské výšce 2291 m. V blízkosti průsmyku se nachází menší průsmyk v nadmořské výšce 2209 m, který leží mezi Passo di Foscagno a městem Livigno. Zusammen mit dem Passo d’Eira 2210 m s.l.m. auf der gleichen Strecke verbindet er Bormio mit dem zollfreien Livigno. Livigno ist von Italien her nur über diese Straße ganzjährig erreichbar, da die Forcola di Livigno zwischen Poschiavo (CH) und Livigno nur im Sommer schneefrei ist. The road (SS 301) connects Bormio in the east and Livigno in the west. It is the only link between Livigno and the rest of Italy, and is usually open all year round. This route also includes the subsidiary Eira Pass (Italian: Passo d'Eira) (2209 m) which lies between the Foscagno Pass and Livigno itself. Here lies the village of Trepalle, part of Livigno municipality, and one of Europe's highest inhabited parishes. Although both sides of the pass are in the same country, Italy, you are required to pass through customs at the top. This is due to the duty-free status of Livigno. The pass is located on the main alpine watershed. Water on the north side of the pass flows down into the Inn and Danube, whereas water on the south side flows down into the Adda and Po. (en)

Op de pashoogte is een controlepost, dit omdat Livigno in een belastingvrije zone ligt. De weg is vaak erg druk door de vele wintersporters en koopjesjagers. Het wegdek van de pas is breed en matig stijgend. De bergpas is ook in de winter geopend. Vanuit Valdidentro klimt de weg omhoog met ruime bochten naar de opening van het Val Viola. Daar buigt de weg en baant zich een weg over de helling, deels met lawinegalerijen naar pashoogte. Vlak voor de controlepost liggen een aantal kleine meren. Na pashoogte daalt de weg snel en leidt door het Valle di Foscagno. Na een paar kilometer wordt Trepalle bereikt, dit maakt deel uit van Livigno en hier treft men de eerste taxfree winkels aan.
