Gasteren havis je la 1-a de januaro 2014 397 loĝantojn. Gasteren estas karakteriza vilaĝo sur la sablogrundoj de Drenthe. Ĝi estas karakterizata per la multaj saksaj farmdomoj. Kontraŭe al multaj aliaj partoj de Drenthe, ankaŭ la pejzaĝo grandparte konservis sian originan formon. En la Dunoj de Gasteren troviĝas dolmeno. Gasteren havas hotelon, restoracion, kafejon kaj sportkampon, sed por aliaj aranĝoj tute dependas de la najbaraj vilaĝoj. Gasteren apartenis ĝis la 1-a de januaro 1998 al la komunumo Anloo. (eo)

The village was first mentioned between 1298 and 1304 as "in villa Ghestre, apud Ghesteren". The etymology is unclear. The hunebed (dolmen) is a small incomplete dolmen. It has been fenced off because there are sheep in the heath. It used to have four capstones, but only two have remained. There are also 44 burial mounds around the village. Gasteren was home to 155 people in 1840. (en)

- Gasteren (Drents: Gaastern) is een dorpje in de gemeente Aa en Hunze in de Nederlandse provincie Drenthe. Het dorp ligt midden in het Nationaal beek- en esdorpenlandschap Drentsche Aa. Gasteren telde op 1 januari 2021 400 inwoners. Gasteren is een karakteristiek brinkdorp op de Drentse zandgronden. Het wordt gekenmerkt door de vele Saksische boerderijen. In tegenstelling tot veel andere delen van Drenthe, heeft ook het landschap hier grotendeels de oorspronkelijke vorm behouden. De marke van Gasteren bestaat uit essen, heidevelden (Gasterse Duinen, Balloërveld), enkele kleine bospercelen (Gastersche Holt, ), en groenlanden langs de beken (het Gastersche of Gasterensche Diep, deel van het stroomgebied van de Drentsche Aa, en het Anlooër Diepje). In de Gasterse Duinen is een hunebed te vinden. Gasteren heeft enkele horecagelegenheden en een sportveld, maar is voor andere voorzieningen volledig aangewezen op de buurdorpen.
