- Lancaster's chevauchée of 1356 in Normandy was an English offensive directed by Henry, Duke of Lancaster, in northern France during 1356, as a part of the Hundred Years' War. The offensive took the form of a large mounted raid—a chevauchée—and lasted from 22 June to 13 July. During its final week the English were pursued by a much larger French army under King John II that failed to force them to battle. King John had turned against a group of senior Normandy-based French nobles, headed by Charles II of Navarre, whom John believed to be treacherous. Seeing an opportunity, Edward III of England diverted an expedition planned for the Duchy of Brittany under Lancaster to the Cotentin Peninsula in north-west Normandy. From there, after gathering some local reinforcements, Lancaster set off south with 2,300 men. He then pillaged and burnt his way eastward across the Duchy of Normandy. King John moved to Rouen with a much stronger force, hoping to intercept Lancaster, but after relieving and supplying the besieged citadel of Pont-Audemer the English turned south. They supplied another friendly fortification, Breteuil, then stormed and sacked the important town of Verneuil-sur-Avre. John pursued but bungled several opportunities to bring the English to battle. The English made long and rapid marches back to the safety of the northern Cotentin. In 22 days the English travelled 330 mi (530 km), a remarkable effort for the period. Two besieged fortifications had been supplied, the expedition had seized a large amount of loot, including many horses, damage had been done to the French economy and prestige, new alliances had been cemented, there had been few casualties and the French King had been distracted from the English preparations for a greater chevauchée from south-west France. La chevauchée dure du 22 juin au 13 juillet. Au cours de sa dernière semaine, les Anglais sont poursuivis par une armée française beaucoup plus importante, commandée par le roi Jean II, qui ne réussit cependant pas à les contraindre à livrer bataille. L'opération puise son origine dans les troubles internes qui agitent la Normandie. Pour manifester leur opposition à Jean II, les nobles normands refusent de payer leurs impôts. Pour rétablir son autorité, ce dernier décide d'un coup de force au cours duquel il fait arrêter dix d'entre eux, dont Charles le Mauvais, roi de Navarre mais aussi grand seigneur en Normandie. Loin de régler la contestation, l'action du roi met le feu aux poudres, et la Normandie se soulève, appuyée par le royaume de Navarre. Voyant là une opportunité, Édouard III d'Angleterre détourne une expédition prévue pour le duché de Bretagne, sous les ordres du duc de Lancastre, vers la péninsule du Cotentin, au nord-ouest de la Normandie, pour apporter son soutien aux rebelles normands. De là, après avoir rassemblé quelques renforts locaux, Lancastre ravage le duché de Normandie avec 2 300 hommes, début juin 1356. Le roi Jean se dirige alors vers Rouen avec une force beaucoup plus importante, espérant l'intercepter. Après avoir approvisionné la forteresse assiégée de Pont-Audemer, les Anglais se tournent vers le sud. Ils approvisionnent une autre fortification rebelle, Breteuil, puis prennent d'assaut et saccagent l'importante ville de Verneuil-sur-Avre. Jean les poursuit mais manque plusieurs occasions d'acculer les Anglais au combat, permettant à Lancastre de regagner la sécurité du Cotentin le 13 juillet 1356, avec peu de pertes et de très bons résultats militaires : en 22 jours, les Anglais ont parcouru 530 kilomètres ; deux fortifications assiégées ont été ravitaillées, une grande quantité de butin a été prise, y compris de nombreux chevaux ; des dommages ont été causés à l'économie et au prestige français ; de nouvelles alliances ont été cimentées et l'attention du roi de France a été détournée des préparatifs anglais d'une plus grande chevauchée qui allait s'élancer au sud-ouest de la France (la chevauchée du Prince Noir de 1356).
