- Operation Starlite war die erste rein amerikanische Militäroffensive in Vietnam im Jahre 1965. - Operation Starlite (also known in Vietnam as Battle of Van Tuong) was the first major offensive action conducted by a purely U.S. military unit during the Vietnam War from 18 to 24 August 1965. The operation was launched based on intelligence provided by Major general Nguyen Chanh Thi, the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) I Corps commander. III Marine Amphibious Force (III MAF) commander Lieutenant General Lewis W. Walt devised a plan to launch a pre-emptive strike against the Viet Cong (VC) 1st Regiment to nullify their threat to the vital Chu Lai Air Base and Base Area and ensure its powerful communication tower remained intact. The operation was conducted as a combined arms assault involving ground, air and naval units. U.S. Marines were deployed by helicopter insertion while an amphibious landing was used to deploy other Marines. The VC used a variety of tactics to counter the Marine assault, fighting from prepared positions and then withdrawing as the Marines gained local superiority and ambushing a lost supply column. The VC were unable to withstand the weight of the Marine assault and U.S. firepower losing 614 killed and nine captured for U.S. losses of 42 killed. (en)

All'operazione presero parte circa 5.500 Marines appartenenti alla 3ª Divisione, oltre al supporto fornito dagli aerei dei Marines, e al fuoco delle navi della marina. Подразделения морской пехоты и Армии США проводили наступательные операции в Южном Вьетнаме с мая—июня 1965 года, встречая поначалу лишь эпизодическое сопротивление партизан НФОЮВ. В августе командование 3-й дивизии морской пехоты получило от партизана-перебежчика информацию, что 1-й полк НФОЮВ готовится атаковать американскую базу Чулай (провинция Куангнгай). Было решено нанести упреждающий удар по известным позициям противника. Операция «Starlite» была разработана в кратчайшие сроки и предусматривала проведение одновременного морского и вертолётного десанта в районе деревни Вантыонг южнее Чулай, что должно было привести к окружению 1-го полка. Выдвижение войск началось 17 августа. Высадка десанта из 4 батальонов была произведена утром 18 августа. Почти сразу американские силы столкнулись с серьёзным сопротивлением противника. Основные боевые действия развернулись вокруг высоты 43 и деревни Анкуонг. Кроме того, в засаду партизан попала американская колонна снабжения. Благодаря массированной артиллерийской и авиационной поддержке морской пехоте во всех случаях удалось выбить противника с занимаемых им позиций. К концу дня подразделения НФОЮВ отступили, очевидно, найдя брешь в кольце окружения. Операция «Starlite» продлилась до 24 августа, однако более не сопровождалась контактами с противником. В ходе операции морская пехота потеряла около 50 человек погибшими. Потери НФОЮВ оцениваются примерно в 600 человек погибшими. Почти все потери сторон приходятся на сражение 18 августа. Операция «Starlite» считается крупной победой сил США. 1-й полк НФОЮВ после понесённых потерь на некоторое время (вероятно, до октября) утратил боеспособность.
