With new add notes, you can build numbers that specify the foods to be avoided. For example, at 613.2683–.2685 Diets that exclude specific foods from plant crops is the add note: "Add to base number 613.268 the numbers following 63 in 633–635 for the food to be excluded, e.g., wheat-free diet 613.268311." The example number is built with 311 from 633.11 Wheat. Because there is much overlap between wheat-free diet and gluten-free diet, we provide for both topics to be classed in the same number. At 613.268311 Wheat-free diet is the class-here note "Class here comprehensive works on gluten-free diet" plus see references to the numbers for rye-free diet and barley-free diet.
Similarly, because there is much overlap between dairy-free diet and lactose-free or casein-free diets, we provide for the topics to be classed in the same number. At 613.2687 Diets that exclude dairy and related products is the class-here note "Class here dairy-free diet; casein-free diet, lactose-free diet."
There are parallel provisions under 641.309 and 641.5639.
How to decide whether to use 613.268 or 641.309 or 641.5639? At 613.2 Dietetics is the class-here note: "Class here applied nutrition; guides to nutritional aspects of food, of beverages; comprehensive works on personal health aspects of food, of beverages." At 641.3 Food is the class-here note: "Class here interdisciplinary works on food." (Remember, class-here notes have hierarchical force.)
The Manual note 363.8 vs. 613.2, 641.3 Food supply vs. Dietetics vs. Food reinforces the class-here notes:
Use 613.2 for works emphasizing how to help individuals meet dietary requirements and maintain optimal balanced intake without gaining or losing weight, for material to help dietitians in planning diets for individuals, and for comprehensive works on personal aspects of nutrition. Use 641.3 for works emphasizing the food itself and for interdisciplinary works on food. If in doubt, prefer in the following order: 363.8, 641.3, 613.2.
In summary, works classed in 613.268 focus on personal health aspects of diets. Works classed in 641.309 emphasize food itself or give interdisciplinary treatment to food. Works classed in 641.5639 have a heavy emphasis on cooking and recipes. Works classed in the interdisciplinary number 641.309 may include much
material that by itself would be classed in 613.268, and may include recipes that by themselves would be classed in 641.5639.
Most of the new numbers result from simple expansion. There are, however, two relocations. One is a relocation from 641.302 Health foods to 641.309 Alternative foods for diets that exclude specific foods, explained in the relocation notes that appear in the History box in WebDewey for each number, e.g., at 641.302:
