The Global Minds Initiative Germany supports change-makers of the future. Welcome to the first research fellows! 👋 The new programme of the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space enables researchers from abroad to work on innovative research projects, further strengthening Germany as a place of international collaboration and scientific progress. One of the first fellows of the programme is psychologist Dr Víctor Hugo Masías Hinojosa, who works in the field of Computational Social Sciences. Why did he decide to come to Germany? “My vision is to become an agent of change and promote more humane and equitable cities. The Humboldt Foundation is recognised worldwide for enabling individuals to pursue their ideas and promote research driven by intellectual curiosity. Its environment minimises restrictions and encourages innovation, providing the most fertile ground for significant scientific advances to be transferred to industry. In fact, many foreign researchers see Germany as a safe haven for their research, especially in light of global problems and geopolitical changes that make them uncertain about their future.” Dr Masías (Chile) is conducting research at Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin with a Humboldt Research Fellowship. His work focuses on empirical social research, particularly the analysis of social structures and health inequalities in urban environments. Bird flu has been spreading rapidly in Germany. How can we prevent regional outbreaks in the future? Our Humboldt Professor for #AI Joacim Rocklöv and his research team at Universität Heidelberg have developed a machine learning model that can predict highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreak patterns in Europe. 👇 #vogelgrippe #birdflu #AvHProfessor
This is the finding of a research team led by epidemiologist, mathematician, and statistician Prof. Dr Joacim Rocklöv. The researchers at Heidelberg University developed a machine learning model that can predict highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreak patterns in Europe with great accuracy using various indicators. The modeling approach and targeted data collection could therefore contribute to proactive prevention measures. The question isn’t if #AI is changing the world – but how? At our Bonn Humboldt Award Winners’ Forum, top researchers discuss current developments in artificial intelligence. In his opening remarks at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn yesterday, the Humboldt Foundation’s Secretary General, Zanner Markus, emphasised the role AI plays for the Foundation and for the German scientific landscape. He praised the visionary work of the Humboldt Professors for AI, who are leading the way into the future. In his keynote lecture on responsible AI, Kristian Kersting, expert for artificial intelligence and machine learning, highlighted the benefits and current challenges – especially with respect to enhancing public AI research and fostering public–private partnerships. Overall he stressed: "The machine is not perfect, the human is not either, but together they might be perfect." 💡Key questions of the event: What kind of AI do we need and want? How can we separate the hype from serious scientific and technological progress? What are the benefits for society? The Forum aims to offer a platform of exchange by uniting the who’s who of AI research in Germany: Kristian Kersting, Humboldt Professors for AI Holger Hoos, Hector Geffner, Vincent C. Müller, André Platzer, Daniel Rueckert, Angela Schoellig, Heike Vallery, and Angela Yu, Humboldt Professor Oliver Brock, Sofja Kovalevskaja Award winner Milica Gasic, Max Planck-Humboldt Medal winner Sumit Gulwani, and Humboldt Research Award winner Toby Walsh FAA FTSE FRSN. 🤩 A special thank you goes to the host Holger Hoos and the two other members of the Scientific Committee: Oliver Brock and Vincent Müller. Over the next few days, we’ll delve into all things AI with lectures, flash talks and panel discussions. In the words of our Secretary General, Markus Zanner: "The idea for our Award Winners’ Forum is to connect observations, to connect scientific ideas. And most importantly: to connect people!"
