ALLEA kicked off the inaugural meeting of its newly formed Task Force on "Integrating Research Security and Academic Freedom" at the European #Flagship #Conference on Research Security in Brussels (#EUResearchSecurity2025). The Task Force members discussed the increasing complexity of global research collaboration amid rising geopolitical tensions, a coordinated European approach to research security, and ways in which reasonable security measures could enable, rather than impede, #AcademicFreedom. "The research community is facing a lot of risks that threaten to undermine the scientific enterprise. Some of them are malign and should be fought resolutely. But some are less so and should be coped with because we don't want to live in a risk-free society but rather in an open one where science remains free," says Arne Jarrick, Chair of the ALLEA Task Force on Integrating Research Security and Academic Freedom, and member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History, and Antiquities (Kungl. Vitterhetsakademien) and The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. ALLEA looks forward to sharing key insights and outputs from more such spirited meetings of our Task Force. It's Day 2 of the Conference on #EUResearchSecurity2025, and we are talking about #AcademicFreedom! ALLEA and Science Europe look forward to hosting experts to discuss the falsity of pitting Academic Freedom against Research Security in a session titled, Not a trade-off: Integrating Academic Freedom and Research Security. The session will debate the idea that these two principles rather than being in conflict, are mutually reinforcing: effective research security measures should protect the very freedoms on which high-quality science depends, while academic freedom creates the conditions for secure, trustworthy research to flourish. ALLEA is happy to co-organise the European Flagship Conference on Research Security in Brussels alongside the European Commission, which kicks off today. Over the next 3 days, stakeholders from across Europe will debate the pathways for European Research to remain #open and #collaborative, while safeguarding research and innovation from serious #security threats in this volatile geopolitical climate. From 28 to 30 October 2025, the first European Flagship Conference on Research Security will take place in Brussels. On 29 October 2025, ALLEA and Science Europe will host the session titled “Not a trade-off: Integrating academic freedom and research security”. Academic freedom and research security are often seen as separate or even conflicting priorities. However, these principles are intrinsically linked and should be mutually reinforcing. This session will explore how safeguarding academic freedom is essential to maintaining both research security and integrity, particularly in today’s rapidly evolving geopolitical and technological landscape, and how research security measures should be designed and implemented to enable international collaboration. Building on ALLEA’s and Science Europe’s ongoing work and past collaborations, the session aims to discuss concerns on research security that may come at the expense of academic freedom, to approach misconceptions, and foster a more integrated understanding of these principles. The Flagship Conference is co-organised by the European Commission and the European R&I sector through a unique collaboration with 12 European stakeholder associations: ALLEA, CESAER, Coimbra Group, EARTO - European Association of Research and Technology Organisations, EECARO, European University Association, EU-LIFE, G6, League of European Research Universities (LERU), Science Europe, The Guild, and YERUN - Young European Research Universities. Last week, the SAPEA staff and Board members came together for a productive series of meetings and workshops. Following the SAPEA Board meeting, we explored the use of AI in the context of the Scientific Advice Mechanism (SAM), exchanging ideas and perspectives on how emerging technologies can support evidence-informed policymaking in Europe.

Ylva Engstrom, vice-president of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, which awards the prizes for chemistry, physics and economics, and ALLEA Board Member, is quoted by The Guardian in this piece covering recent measures from the U.S. administration: “I think in both the short and long term, it can have devastating effects,” Engstrom told Reuters in an interview. “Academic freedom ... is one of the pillars of the democratic system." The nomination process for the ALLEA Madame de Staël Prize 2025 has concluded. We would like to thank all ALLEA member academies for nominating their candidates! Nominations were received by 30 September 2025. In October and November of the same year, the Prize Jury will evaluate the nominations and select the laureate.
