At the final partner meeting of the #BeyondSnow project in Turin and the surrounding area (pilot working area in the project), we explored the unique region around Monesi di Triora and the Valle Arroscia. ⛰️ Our visit to Monesi took us through its history and the challenges of today: from the first ski lifts in the 1950s to the effects of climate change through declining snowfall and issues such as land ownership and landscape use. Despite closures and isolation, the community continues to show resilience and foresight for the future. ⛰️ In Cosio d'Arroscia, we learned how the community is working to keep the village alive, restore its historic character and strengthen services for the local population, including through collaboration with neighbouring communities. 💚🍽️ At the heart of the transition strategy developed in the BeyondSnow project is the Strada della Cucina Bianca, a culinary route that combines gastronomy, agriculture and cultural heritage as a driver for sustainable tourism. Together with the Parco Naturale Regionale delle Alpi Liguri, the communities of the Valle Arroscia are building on their natural and cultural heritage to create opportunities that go beyond snow. The #ClosingConference of the #BeyondSnow project took place in Turin at the end of September, where all project partners presented their results. The programme included a comprehensive overview of all the results and findings: 🔹 Context, approach, and scientific results of the project 🔹 Communication measures and interactive event formats 🔹 Individual actions and achievements such as 🧩 the Vulnerability Map, the Resilience Digital Tool, the 10 transition strategies & pilot measures of the pilot working areas and Policy Guidelines The Interreg Alpine Space project, on which we have been working intensively with 13 partners from six Alpine countries over the last three years, will come to an end at the end of October. But the journey continues. ➡️ The aim is that all Alpine destinations benefit from the project, and we are sure that a great deal has been achieved, and so many people have been reached. ⁉️Do you know what an Italian researcher, a Slovene researcher, a couple of future PhDs, a German intern, Alliance in the Alps and CIPRA France were doing in Kransja Gora this week? 💡Good guess! We were working on our common project on local #governance of quality of life in the #Alps! Or how to translate the Alpine Convention's latest report at the municipal level ⛰️ So what happened? - We planned the next online webinars you will be invited to! - We launched the work on our practical handbook which will fit perfectly fine on your bedstand ;) - We tried to make sense of the different definitions of "governance" in the Alpine countries ... - We delved into the local situations of our 10 pilot territories (we will present them to you very soon) - We very much enjoyed being there during the food festival! 👣 Our next step now is to identify the governance gaps in the Alps - for instance, how can we better ensure continuity of strategies between mayors mandates? How to articulate individual wants and community needs (mayors are not team managers!) ? How to balance municipality and population expectations in terms of service delivery? Last week, on 7–8 November, we participated in the Alliance in the Alps Annual Conference 2025 in Koblach (AT). The first day featured insightful panel discussions and an excursion, while the second day focused on an interactive workshop that presented two Interreg projects: ProCure and BrokeringSpaces. As part of the BrokeringSpaces group, the focus was on Spatial Planning in the Alps. We discussed key challenges, arguments for and against specific approaches, and identified the type of support or solutions that could help address these issues. The main emphasis was on negotiation, a core theme of the BrokeringSpaces project, especially when it comes to balancing diverse interests in spatial planning. The workshop offered valuable insights into how municipalities, NGOs, experts, and residents think and prioritize in decision-making processes, a reminder of how essential cooperation and dialogue are! Following the conference, we also held a BrokeringSpaces meeting to plan upcoming activities for the end of this year and the continuation into 2026. 🤝 A big thank you to all participants and especially thanks to Alliance in the Alps for inspiring conference, discussions, and collaboration!
