Baltic Approaches to Handling Plastic Pollution under a Circular Economy Context

Info

The project BALTIPLAST aims at prevention and reduction of plastic waste in the Baltic Sea Region, focusing on single-use plastic reduction, improvements in plastic packaging and innovative collection and treatment systems at the municipality level. A consortium of partners from Germany, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, will develop and test solutions at three levels of operation: Strategic and management; technological and technical; communication and behavior change. The project involves some key actors in the plastic waste value chain, primarily municipalities in the participating countries, as well as SMEs and large enterprises operating in the field of waste management. NGOs and interest groups will be involved, for the dissemination of results. It contributes to EU Strategy for the BSR, specifically to the Policy Area of Bioeconomy, dwelling on responsible use of resources, changing mindsets and consumer behavior, through cross-sectorial approaches, by up-scaling waste to integrate it into a circular economy, by testing public procurement models and integrating circular economy policies in the activities of the target groups. The project design is guided by co-creative innovation, through new schemes of collaboration in country clusters, further transferring them to a transnational level. The project BALTIPLAST co-financed by Interreg Baltic Sea Region helps driving the transition to a green and resilient Baltic Sea region.

🏙️ 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗼𝗳𝘁 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗻 𝗜𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗕𝗔𝗟𝗧𝗜𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗦𝗧 At the 𝗦𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗮 𝗦𝘆𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘂𝗺 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱, Liina Kanarbik presented how the 𝗕𝗔𝗟𝗧𝗜𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗦𝗧 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 supports cities in moving toward 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗳𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 that make circular change last. Because reducing single-use plastics isn’t just about materials — it’s about 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘀, 𝗴𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. One of the best examples comes from 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗻, the European Green Capital 2023. With guidance from BALTIPLAST, the city successfully transitioned its public events toward 𝗿𝗲𝘂𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀, showing how data-driven strategy and behavioral insights can transform everyday practices. Tallinn’s case shows that 𝘴𝘰𝘧𝘵 𝘴𝘰𝘭𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘥𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘥 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘴: less waste, lower emissions, and greater public ownership of sustainability goals. As presented in Sardinia, 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 form the backbone of an effective circular transition — where governance and behavior evolve together. 🌊 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗪𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘄, 𝗖𝘂𝗽, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗪𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗿 — 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 Every year, 12 million tonnes of plastic enter our oceans — and the 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝗲𝗮 is among the most vulnerable. But what if companies could 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦 and 𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘦 their single-use plastic footprint — and save money doing it? At the 𝗦𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗮 𝗦𝘆𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘂𝗺 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱, we presented our latest results from the 𝗕𝗔𝗟𝗧𝗜𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗦𝗧 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁, including the 𝗕𝗔𝗟𝗧𝗜𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗦𝗧 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗧𝗼𝗼𝗹 — a practical, data-driven method that helps companies across the Baltic region track and cut their plastic and carbon footprints. 🔹 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀: • Participating companies achieved 𝟯𝟵–𝟲𝟲% 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝗼𝘅𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 through reuse, refill, and behavioral changes. • These same measures also reduced procurement and waste costs by 𝟮𝟲–𝟰𝟲% — proving that 𝘴𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘱𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘰𝘧𝘧. The Inventory Tool turns awareness into action: it identifies plastic “leverage points,” quantifies impacts, and recommends tested alternatives for real-world change. As we scale this across the region, the next step is policy integration — turning local innovation into a 𝗰𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿, 𝗹𝗼𝘄-𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆. ♻️ Learn more about the BALTIPLAST project: https://lnkd.in/e86kdtPB 📅 𝗝𝗼𝗶𝗻 𝘂𝘀 at our Final Conference: “From Waste to Wisdom: Baltic Quest for Plastic Reduction” 🗓️ Turku, Finland | 10–11 December 2025 | More details: https://lnkd.in/eZE7_vhG #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #PlasticReduction #CarbonFootprint #BalticSea #InterregBSR #BALTIPLAST #MadeWithInterreg
