🌍 As COP30 approaches next week, 2024’s record rise in carbon reminds us that three decades of negotiations have yet to bend the global emissions curve. This year marks the 30th Conference of the Parties, being held in Belém, Brazil. Apart from taking place at the symbolically important gateway to the Amazon, this also marks the tenth anniversary of the Paris Agreement. This year's themes includes making climate mitigation, adaptation, and finance operational. But with logistical problems leading to accommodation price hikes, important civil society groups and delegations are not attending. COP30 is set to become one of the quietest in recent memory. While policymakers debate how to mitigate, adapt, etc., businesses don’t (have to) wait. Our project of the month: Restoring nature across the United Kingdom 🌿 Climate change is increasingly affecting Europe, with heatwaves, droughts, and severe storms putting forest ecosystems at risk. In Scottish Borders, Hopecarton Burn is a landscape historically shaped by sheep grazing. To restore and rejuvenate these habitats and support a greater diversity of flora and fauna, this project is transforming Hopecarton Burn and several other sites across the UK into resilient, mixed woodlands. Since 2020, more than 205,000 trees have been planted across over 100 hectares in Hopecarton Burn alone. Today, species such as Hazel, Oak, Cherry, and Hawthorn thrive here, forming a rich mosaic of woodland habitats. 🦋 New species discovered in the Karwendel Nature Park! During the ÖEG Insect Camp 2024, researchers exploring Austria’s largest nature park documented a previously undescribed insect species — a reminder of how much biodiversity still awaits discovery and protection. When companies contribute to climate projects, they fund more than emissions reductions: they enable on-the-ground conservation work like species surveys and peatland restoration. Together, these efforts protect habitats and preserve biodiversity in one of the Alps’ most species-rich regions. 🌱 Regenerative farming in practice     This week, our colleagues joined Agreena on a field trip to see regenerative agriculture in action. Hearing directly from farmers about the transition from conventional to regenerative practices provided valuable insights into both the challenges and the opportunities of this shift. With one of the first internationally accredited soil carbon certification programmes, Agreena takes a farmer-first approach, enabling farmers to finance the move to lower-carbon practices. By adopting regenerative methods, farmers reduce and remove emissions, improve soil health and boost biodiversity, transforming their fields into carbon sinks. As food and agriculture account for one-fourth of global greenhouse gas emissions, advancing sustainable farming practices is one of the most powerful levers for climate action. 🌍 Today is World Clean Up Day 2025, join the 114 million participants taking action against the waste crisis. Since 2018 Let's Do It World Global / World Cleanup Day Global has been organising donations-based community cleanup actions around the world. This year’s focus: textile waste ️👕 When clothing ends up in landfills or incinerators, it creates waste and emissions, increasing both pollution and resource depletion. The scale of textile waste feeding the ocean pollution crisis is striking:  🚮 Every year we throw away 2 billion tons of waste, 99% of what we buy is dumped in the first 6 months.  ♻ From all the plastic ever made, only 9% has been recycled, 12% incinerated, and 79% will be in landfills or the natural environment.  🧵 Textile waste contributes 9% of the microplastic pollution flowing into the ocean.   🐟 By 2050, the oceans could have more plastic than fish.  🏭 Every year the textile sector produces 2-8% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
