Reimagining Geothermal Energy with CO₂ At Factor2 Energy, we are pioneering a new generation of geothermal technology. Our approach uses CO₂ as the working fluid in geothermal power generation – enabling emission-free, efficient, and baseload-capable electricity. By repurposing geological formations that either naturally contain CO₂ or are designated for carbon capture and storage (CCS), we transform passive storage sites into active, sustainable energy resources. Our technology leverages the unique thermophysical properties of CO₂ to unlock significantly more viable sites than conventional geothermal – without fracking, without new drilling technologies, and by building on existing infrastructure and know-how.

  • Many call CO₂ storage the end of the journey. We call it step one. At the 6th EAGE Global Energy Transition Conference & Exhibition in Rotterdam, Factor2 Energy joined experts from across the energy sector to exchange ideas on how existing and future CO₂ storage sites can be transformed into productive subsurface assets that can deliver clean and baseload-capable power. Organized by the EAGE (European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers), the event brought together leaders from CCS, geothermal, hydrogen, and renewables to advance practical routes to net zero. We presented our CO₂-based geothermal power approach, showing how captured CO₂ can circulate to generate power while remaining safely stored in the cycle. What we’re bringing home: • We saw clear market pull to turn CO₂ storage from a cost into value-generating infrastructure. • We identified concrete collaboration paths across operators, service providers, and researchers spanning monitoring, reservoir simulation, and permitting readiness. • We return with focused priorities to advance subsurface modeling and monitoring for safe, efficient, and compliant scale-up. The insights from #EAGEGET2025 reinforced our conviction: The future of CO₂ management lies not only in storing, but in using it to power the energy transition. #EAGEGET2025 #EnergyTransition #CCUS #Geothermal Photo (left to right): Eduarda da Silva Gomes, Felix Böhmer, and Saeed Khajooie representing Factor2 Energy at EAGE GET 2025.

“Every corner of the subsurface has its own character, like a person.” For Eduarda, understanding those hidden personalities of the earth is what makes her work so intriguing. As a Reservoir Engineer, she studies the intricate relationship between rocks, fluids and heat deep underground. In simple terms, her work helps us answer a crucial question: where and how can we tap into the earth’s natural energy potential most efficiently? Reservoir engineering might sound abstract, but it lies at the very core of what we do at Factor2 Energy. Before we can design a single turbine or heat exchanger, we first need to understand the geological system that feeds our plant. The temperature, pressure, and permeability of the reservoir determine how much energy we can extract and how sustainably we can operate. That is where Eduarda’s expertise becomes essential. She identifies and assesses potential geothermal sites, combining geological data, rock characteristics, and fluid behavior. Turning imperfect, often incomplete data into meaningful insights is a challenging puzzle. “Both the rocks and the fluids are incredibly complex. Bringing them together and understanding how they interact is what makes it so rewarding,” Eduarda says. Originally from Brazil, Eduarda has always been driven by a desire to explore new places, learn new languages and understand different cultures. That same spirit defines how she approaches challenges at work. Her mindset is simple: “Why not?” If something has not been done before or it is hard to achieve, she is the one who wants to prove that it can be. Unafraid of complexity and motivated by curiosity, she brings exactly the kind of determination that fuels the innovation at Factor2. #GeothermalEnergy #Subsurface #EngineeringExcellence #ReservoirEngineering

CCS is now possible in Germany, and we couldn’t be more excited! On August 6th, 2025, the German Federal Cabinet approved the amendment of the Carbon Dioxide Storage Act (Kohlendioxid-Speichergesetz). This new law enables Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) - the capturing, transporting, and underground storage of CO₂ - to be implemented at a commercial scale in Germany. It’s a crucial step forward for reducing CO₂ emissions from large industrial sources and advancing the energy transition. At Factor2 Energy, we see huge potential in this development. Our innovative geothermal system uses CO₂ as its working fluid to generate clean, reliable baseload power from geothermal sites that either naturally contain CO2 or are designated for carbon capture and storage. This way, we are able to create a new value stream from what was previously considered a waste product and a dead end, supporting both climate protection and the economic sustainability of CCS. We look forward to helping turn this regulatory milestone into tangible progress. In doing so, we aim to play a part in transforming stored CO₂ into a key resource for green energy generation and unlocking the full potential of CCS. #CCS #CleanEnergy #ClimateAction #SustainableInnovation

“What happens if you combine a refrigerator with CO₂-based geothermal?” This could have been an alternative way to phrase Urbano's research question. Since April 2025, he has been working with us at Factor2 as part of a research project in collaboration with the TUM - Lehrstuhl für Energiesysteme at Technical University of Munich, where he's currently pursuing his Master’s degree in Power Engineering. The project focuses on simulating and optimizing geothermal power plants that use CO₂ instead of water as the working fluid. A key question: Can the integration of a chiller — essentially a high-performance refrigeration unit — increase the plant’s net power output? To understand the motivation behind this study, it is essential to grasp a fundamental thermodynamic principle: After expanding in the turbine, the CO₂, just like water in a conventional steam power plant, must be cooled before it can be recycled. Every degree the fluid cools here translates directly into more power generated by the plant. Building on this principle, Urbano develops a first-principles simulation model in Python. He integrates different chiller designs and simulates a full year of plant operation to assess their impact on net power output. His goal is to find out if chillers can boost performance and if the extra effort and complexity are worth it. Driven by curiosity and a passion for renewable energy, Urbano blends creative problem-solving with rigorous engineering to advance geothermal technology and drive the energy transition. His work aligns with Factor2’s mission to accelerate the global shift to clean, efficient, and accessible geothermal power. #GeothermalEnergy #RenewableEnergy #Innovation #ScientificResearch Photo (left to right): Michael Wechsung, Urbano Tataranni, and Fabian Flosbach discussing project details in front of the whiteboard.

„Getting the performance estimates for our plant as accurate as possible. That’s what truly drives me, what I really want to achieve.” And Michael knows exactly what that means. For over 30 years, he was one of the leading experts in steam turbine technology at Siemens Energy, where even a ±1 % deviation from the predicted efficiency meant you had a real problem. That demand for precision has shaped how he approaches engineering challenges. Now, the game has changed: Instead of working with well-defined input parameters, the earth itself, with all its geological complexity and variability, feeds energy into our system. That makes accurate performance prediction not only much more difficult, but more exciting. And if anyone can crack that challenge, it’s Michael. When he’s not fine-tuning performance models, you’ll likely find him in the garden, picking blackberries and crafting homemade wine. Michael is a true optimist and a creative free spirit. Overflowing with ideas and unafraid to experiment, he brings a unique mix of structure and imagination to every challenge — driven by a curiosity and energy that lift the whole team. With Michael’s deep knowledge and innovative spirit, Factor2 is well-positioned to navigate the future of sustainable energy. #GeothermalEnergy #SustainableInnovation #EngineeringExcellence #CleanTech
