🪂 From the Skies to the Office. Meet Fabian Zenner, Chair of the Fresenius Group Works Council and the Site Works Council in Bad Homburg, representing around 4,000 employees across the company. In his free time, Fabian Zenner quite literally rises above it all: he’s a passionate paraglider. Since starting in 2022, he’s found a unique mix of adrenaline, calm, and stunning views in the air. What he values most is the strong sense of community and team spirit that define the sport. The calm and focus he’s gained from paragliding now support him in his professional life at Fresenius - especially during challenging negotiations and conversations, where staying composed and well-prepared makes all the difference. #PeopleAtFresenius #TeamFresenius #CommittedToLife

It was a great pleasure to join the panel discussion “Leveraging Evidence and Tools to Advance AMR Policy Implementation: From Data to Action” at the World Health Summit. We discussed how data and AI can strengthen our responses against Anti-Microbial-Resistance with Dr. Amal Al-Maani, Arshnee Moodley, Kevin Outterson and Mohsen Naghavi. A big thank you to Lothar H. Wieler for moderating this session in a lively and interactive fishbowl format. I was proud to represent Fresenius Group and our ambitions in this most relevant topic. The development of AMR is of major relevance to healthcare systems. AMR increases morbidity and mortality and imposes major burden on resource allocations and costs. One of the cornerstones to fight AMR is prevention and control of infections which necessitate reliable data for surveillance, prevention and clinical management. As an example, how data and AI can help with this, I spotlighted an integrated infection control and prevention program called “ARGOS” from our colleagues at Quirónsalud in Spain—an AI platform that centralizes and displays real-time data for the surveillance, prevention, and control of healthcare-associated infections, enabling early risk detection and timely intervention - a forward-looking project that shows how the smart use of data and AI can improve patient outcomes. Furthermore, clinical workforce can concentrate more on patient care and less on long-lasting searches for data or documentation work. In a time of demographic change, solutions like this will help to strengthen patient care. We had many more examples from the different perspectives of all panelists and we came to the common conclusion that real progress against AMR depends on open exchange and collaboration across disciplines and systems so we can build better tools and learn from each other. Celebrating Scientific Breakthroughs at ESGCT 2025 Congratulations to Dr. Nerea Zabaleta of Cima Universidad de Navarra, whose pioneering work in AAV-based vaccines and gene editing earned this year’s #ESGCT2025 Breakthrough Award from the Fresenius Foundation. Her research exemplifies the kind of innovation that drives progress in modern medicine. At the ESGCT Congress in Seville, the award was presented during the Presidential Symposium, recognizing outstanding achievements in cell and gene therapy. The European Society of Gene and Cell Therapy (ESGCT) brings together leading scientists, clinicians, and industry experts to advance gene and cell-based therapies. This year’s congress showcased the transformative potential of these technologies to improve lives – and the Fresenius Foundation was honored to contribute to this mission. Founded in 1973 by Else and Hans Kröner, the Fresenius Foundation has a long-standing commitment to advancing medicine by honoring breakthrough discoveries and supporting young scientific talent. Through this award, the Foundation continues its mission to elevate science and bring healthcare innovation to the people. The prize was funded through donation support from Fresenius Kabi USA. #ESGCT2025 #CellAndGeneTherapy #CommittedToLife

Today at the World Health Summit, I had the opportunity to join a panel discussion on one of the most pressing challenges of our time: securing access to essential medicines in an increasingly volatile world. Representing Fresenius Group, I shared our perspective on how resilient, localized, and digitally supported manufacturing can help safeguard healthcare systems globally. We believe four strategic pillars are essential to future-proof healthcare: ▪️ Healthcare as a Strategic Industry Healthcare must be recognized not just as a cost factor, but as a driver of prosperity. Generics, for example, account for ~80% of prescriptions in Germany but only ~8% of drug spending. Across Europe and the U.S., the sector creates millions of jobs and contributes significantly to GDP and exports. ▪️ Regional Supply Sovereignty Europe and the U.S. currently depend on China and India for over 70% of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). A disruption in these supply chains can jeopardize access to critical treatments. A coordinated ‘API Airbus’ model, inspired by the aviation sector, could help rebuild local production capacity and ensure long-term resilience. ▪️ Resilience Over Lowest Cost Procurement systems must reward supply stability, not just the lowest price. When essential medicines cost less than €2 per dose, we risk shortages and discontinuations. Resilience premiums and multi-year contracts can help reverse this trend. ▪️ People, Digitalization & AI To close workforce gaps and boost innovation, we must invest in talent and embrace digital tools and AI – within clear regulatory frameworks. Europe needs a true single market for healthcare professionals and practical pathways for AI adoption. Let’s elevate healthcare to its rightful place: as a strategic sector that secures access, drives innovation, and strengthens national resilience. #WHS2025 #CommittedToLife Fotos: Steffen Kugler
