Science & Policy for People & Nature: Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services | #Biodiversity
Info
The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) is an independent intergovernmental body, established by member States in 2012. It provides policymakers with objective scientific assessments about the state of knowledge regarding the planet’s biodiversity, ecosystems and the benefits they provide to people, as well as the tools and methods to protect and sustainably use these vital natural assets. Our mission is to strengthen knowledge foundations for better policy through science, for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, long-term human well-being and sustainable development. The work of IPBES can be broadly grouped into four complementary areas: • Assessments: On specific themes (e.g. “Pollinators, Pollination and Food Production”); methodological issues (e.g. Scenarios and Modelling); and at both the regional and global levels (“Global Assessment on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services”). • Policy Support: Identifying policy-relevant tools and methodologies, facilitating their use, and catalyzing their further development. • Building Capacity & Knowledge: Identifying and meeting the priority capacity, knowledge and data needs of our member States, experts and stakeholders. • Communications & Outreach: Ensuring the widest reach and impact of our work.

IPBES hat dies direkt geteilt
IPBES and UN Biodiversity have a symbiotic relationship and a shared vision to bring science to policy and action for biodiversity. Today on the sidelines of #SBSTTA27, the Executive Secretaries of UN Biodiversity and IPBES met to reaffirm their commitment to this special partnership. Through closer coordination, CBD and IPBES aim to enhance the policy relevance and impact of scientific assessments supporting the implementation of the #KMGBF.
As we approach the global review of progress in the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework #KMGBF, further strengthening of the science-policy interface is crucial. Thank you, Luthando Dziba, IPBES Executive Secretary, and team for your engagement at #SBSTTA27 this week in Panama City. I look forward to the next assessments!

🔎 New research by Stewart, K., Venditti, C., Carmona, C.P. et al. highlights an urgent truth: protecting bird diversity requires both threat abatement & targeted recovery. Prioritizing unique species can save vital ecosystem functions. 🐦 💡 Full study: https://lnkd.in/eTSCXNWx

IPBES hat dies direkt geteilt
This evening’s parliamentary reception was an inspiring start to the UK Business & Biodiversity Forum 2025 Summit. Business can act on nature because we want to, but the bottom line is that we have to act because we need to. If you haven’t already heard about IPBES or Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) now is the time to check them out. Message me if you would like some light reading to get you started! AtkinsRéalis are proud to be UK Business & Biodiversity Forum members. #biodiversity #NaturePositive #NatureOnTheAgenda

Such wonderful support for the IPBES #Nexus and #TransformativeChange assessments that many of us poured our hearts and heads into, strong support came through submissions from parties linked to the IPBES agenda item and comments at the side event Climate and Development Knowledge Network SouthSouthNorth
IPBES’s first #SBSTTA side event covering the #NexusAssessment and #TransformativeChange Assessment yesterday was a great success, thanks to experts and attendees. Thanks especially also to Astrid Schomaker, Executive Secretary of UN Biodiversity for making time to attend the event. Our next SBSTTA side event will take place this evening at 6.15 p.m. in the Africa Regional room and will focus on ongoing assessments. Join us!

Participating in my first #SBSTTA has been an unexpectedly inspiring experience. Having the chance to influence global biodiversity policies through the findings of the #IPBES #TransformativeChange Assessment feels like bringing our four years of collective work to life. Listening to the opening statements from so many country delegates was deeply moving, a genuine recognition of the effort, dedication, and collaboration; but above all love, that went into this assessment. As Coordinating Lead Authors, it has been an honor for Yves Zinngrebe, @Sergio Lambertucci, and me to address SBSTTA and share insights on how to trigger and steer transformative change in biodiversity governance. Alongside the acknowledgements came a powerful call: to create practical tools that enable diverse actors to translate, operationalise, and apply the analytical principles from our assessment. Responding to that call, a group of us is now developing a Practical Guide for Transformative Change; a concrete step toward making #IPBES assessments more actionable and accessible for everyone working to protect life on Earth. Stay tuned! more is coming soon! 🌍✨ #UAMC #UFZ #TheAnthropoceneLab #IPBES

Headline messages from the experts behind the IPBES Nexus Assessment offer urgent guidance for addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges—climate change, water availability and quality, biodiversity loss, food security, and the health of humans, plants, and animals. 1. Global crises are deeply interconnected, but our responses are not. That must change. 2. Solutions already exist. 3. Everyone has a role to play. Collaboration is essential. Panamá is once again showing incredible leadership by hosting crucial international meetings to drive action. It’s an honor to be part of this engaged and committed global community.
In the lead-up to the twenty-seventh meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA-27), IPBES held a workshop today on the #NexusAssessment and #TransformativeChange Assessment, as well as ongoing assessments. A big thanks to UN Biodiversity for the support with the event, to the participants for their engagement, and the IPBES experts for their hard work.
