The first seeds for a more sustainable food production in Brazil have been planted. 🌱 Through the Cultiva Project, ProVeg Brasil is supporting a family‑farmer in the state of Paraná (southern Brazil) to transition from farming animals to agroforestry. This means instead of cattle farming, the farmer will grow diverse crops such as papaya, pumpkin, watermelon, coffee and yerba mate. The transition plan was developed in direct collaboration between ProVeg Brasil and the producer, with key contributions from the Federation of Rural Workers and Family Farmers of Paraná and the Rural Workers' Union of Ortigueira. The project provides free technical support to create a sustainable, profitable, and fair food system. As Gisiliana Oliveira, agroecologist and technical manager of Cultiva, explains: “Crop production is expected to generate more than ten times the income of animal production in the first year of the transition.” The first seedlings are already in the ground, marking the start of a new cycle for people, animals, and the planet. 🌎 Congrats to our colleagues from ProVeg Brazil for kicking off such an important project! We hope more farmers will join. (Photos: Brunno Covello) #ProVeg #ProVegBrasil #ProjetoCultiva #Agroforestry

Policymakers speak out against restrictions on meaty names for plant-based products! 🚫🍔 Germany’s Federal Minister of Agriculture, Alois Rainer, has joined three other ministers in opposing the EU proposal to restrict the use of meat-related terms like “veggie burger” or “plant-based sausage.” Their stance sends a clear message: no step backwards for plant-based innovation. Rainer emphasised that forcing companies to relabel established products would be costly and create unnecessary bureaucracy. Similarly, MEPs such as Anna Strolenberg (Volt, Netherlands) and Anna Stürgkh (NEOS, Austria) have spoken out against the measure, stressing that consumers are not confused and calling for trust and common sense in EU policy. 🥦 If you agree, sign the petition to stop the restriction on meat-related terms for plant-based alternatives: https://lnkd.in/dgGb4hfc #ProVeg #NoConfusion #EUFoodPolicy #EuropeanParliament

This year marks ten years since the Paris Agreement set global targets to reduce CO₂ emissions, and the urgent need for climate action has never been clearer. At the UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Belém, ProVeg will deliver the Belém Declaration on Plant-Rich Diets, a global call for national governments to develop and implement Action Plans for Plant-Based Foods. In this video, our Head of UN Affairs, Juliette Tronchon, explains why promoting plant-based diets is crucial. The Belém Declaration on Plant-Rich Diets has already garnered support from over 100 stakeholders, including city and regional governments, as well as NGOs. Policymakers can join this collective effort by endorsing the declaration and advocating for the integration of plant-based strategies into national policies. 🌍 Take action today and help us drive the transition toward a plant-rich, climate-resilient future: https://lnkd.in/eH_nUipF #ProVeg #COP30 #BelemDeclaration #PlantBasedFuture #FoodSystems

The global plant-based food sector is set to rocket to over $123.1 billion by 2031, and the frozen category is a critical slice of this growth, expected to more than double to $12 billion by 2034. 💵 Why the surge? Shoppers, especially the influential Flexitarian segment, are looking for convenience, sustainability, longer shelf life, and, most importantly, flavour and texture that rivals conventional products. There's huge untapped potential for innovation: 🍽️ A shortage of premium, restaurant-quality frozen ready-meals. 🍳 The definitive plant-based frozen breakfast item (hello, breakfast burrito or pastry!) is yet to emerge. 🥩 The game-changing prize: perfecting the frozen whole-cut plant-based meat alternative. 🏷️ Opportunities to differentiate with clean labels, functional ingredients (like added protein or fibre), and sustainable packaging. This isn't just a fleeting trend; it's a massive market evolution. Brands are pushing boundaries with hyper-realistic alternatives and expanding into frozen seafood and global cuisines. Want the full lowdown on where to innovate and how to gain a competitive edge in the frozen plant-based market? ➡️ Read the full blog for all the insights, data, and opportunities: https://hubs.ly/Q03QbJjK0 #ProVeg #NewFoodHub #PlantBasedAlternatives #FoodInnovation

As more organisations in the food sector embrace plant-based innovation, tracking sustainability metrics has become essential to ensure real impact. Yet, approaches vary widely, from Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) to carbon and water footprint tracking. 🌱 Companies like Oatly and Beyond Meat are already leading the way by publishing transparent sustainability reports and quantifying reductions in emissions, water use, and land impact. Their commitment doesn’t just build trust; it inspires the industry toward meaningful change. Now we want to hear from you! How is your company currently measuring its sustainability impact? 💬 Is there a method you’re using that’s not listed here? Share your approach in the comments! ⬇️

Burger King Austria is making headlines by becoming the first foodservice outlet to swap cow's milk for Oatly's Baristamatic Oat drink in all their speciality coffees! 🤯 This means plant-based is now the standard for coffee drinks across all BK Austria locations. Why the switch? 🚫 No more cow's milk: All speciality coffees (think lattes and cappuccinos) will now be made using Oatly's cutting-edge Baristamatic. ⚙️ Made for machines: Oatly's Baristamatic was specially developed to prevent sedimentation and ensure a smooth, stable flow in fully automatic coffee machines, a game-changer for large-scale operations. ☁️ Creamy perfection: It boasts a slightly higher fat content than their original Barista blend for a stable, creamy, and foamable result. This move is in line with Burger King Austria's previous push toward sustainable choices. In 2022, they experimented with the slogan "Normal or with meat?", making plant-based meat the default option for burgers at one location to encourage customer trial. It seems the "new normal" is definitely plant-based! Should this be rolled out to other fast-food outlets in Austria and beyond? ⬇️ #ProVeg #BurgerKing #PlantBasedNews

Earlier this month, ProVeg’s Senior Policy Research Manager, Josh Bisig, joined researchers, farmers, policymakers, and advocates in Malmö for the Agroecology Europe Forum 2025. The conference is dedicated to advancing agroecological practices and shaping the future of sustainable food and farming in Europe. During a field trip to Alnarp’s experimental farm, Josh presented on the biophysical limitations of a large-scale agroecological transition without dietary change, and the more optimistic scenario if Europeans shift toward healthier, plant-rich diets. He emphasised the importance of National Action Plans for Plant-Based Foods and "ecological intensification" practices as optimal for the health of the people and the planet. "It was clear throughout the forum that policy reform is key. The Common Agricultural Policy can be a major lever for scaling agroecology if it aligns incentives and subsidies with diversified, low-input systems”, he said. As European policy evolves, ProVeg continues to advocate for sustainable food systems and a diverse, resilient EU farming sector. #ProVeg #ProteinDiversification #AEEUForum25 #FoodSystems
