Rising temperatures challenge seagrass seed development 🌱 In their recent study, Kasper Elgetti Brodersen and Morten Foldager Pedersen explored how increasing seawater temperatures affect the photosynthetic activity and oxygen balance of Zostera marina seeds. The results? A clear physiological imbalance: while photosynthesis increased moderately with temperature, dark respiration rose nearly twice as strongly. 🌡️ This led to a 23-fold decline in net oxygen balance from 10°C to 25°C, with potentially detrimental effects on seed development and germination success. The study highlights the vulnerability of seagrass reproduction under future ocean warming scenarios.
