Leveraging the power of the microbiome: The team led by HZI researchers Till Strowig & Dr. Lisa Osbelt-Block is developing a living biotherapeutic based on the bacterium Klebsiella oxytoca that can displace pathogenic bacteria from the gut. The Deutsches Zentrum für Infektionsforschung (DZIF) is now supporting the project with €2.2 million. A paper in Nature Microbiology reports that the use of artificial intelligence to mine proteomes of archaea led to the discovery of archaeasins, antimicrobials that kill drug-resistant bacteria in laboratory and animal models, offering a promising source of future antibiotics. Kaska Koltowska has identified unique DNA sequences, enhancers, which are active in lymphatic vessels. She hopes that new research will reveal new hidden secrets of the lymphatic vessel formation. “Lymphedema is a disease affecting 250 million people worldwide. It causes swelling and fluid buildup in parts of the body. People can either be born with it or develop it later in life,” says Katarzyna “Kaska” Koltowska, Wallenberg Academy Fellow, Uppsala University. For instance, about 20 percent of cancer patients will develop lymphedema. The question is why only some patients, after lymph node removal, get the disease. “We’re making progress, but much work remains to be done.” She hopes, however, that their research will one day help predict which lymphatic vessels are predisposed to malfunction. Promising findings in mice and humans suggest that apolipoprotein M (ApoM) may play a protective role against age-related macular degeneration (AMD). This study highlights ApoM’s potential in modulating oxidative stress and complement activation, two key contributors to AMD pathogenesis. As the population ages and AMD prevalence grows, understanding these molecular mechanisms is critical to identifying new therapeutic targets.
