Germany faces a dual challenge. Maintaining industrial competitiveness while meeting ambitious climate targets. As global competition is increasingly shaped by energy costs, and with the risk of missing decarbonization goals, a new approach is needed. The green gas quota stands out as the most effective solution to accelerate the ramp-up of green gases. 📈   In concrete terms here are the key advantages:  ✔️ Budget-neutrality: No direct government funding required, ensuring the mechanism is robust against budgetary constraints or political cycles  ✔️ Fair cost distribution: The midstream approach spreads costs evenly among all gas customers, avoiding competitiveness risks for industry and heavy burdens on any single consumer group.  ✔️ Market-driven innovation: The competitive market environment delivers the most cost-effective green gases and stimulates technology development  ✔️ Infrastructure leverage: Existing gas networks can be efficiently utilized, significantly reducing the need for new infrastructure investments, particularly if biomethane and e-NG remain the dominant compliance options. It’s not just in Germany. International experience further underscores its viability. France, Japan, Canada, Austria, The Netherlands, and Belgium are all implementing or considering green gas quotas. For Germany, joining this trend is essential to remain globally competitive and to align with evolving EU energy policy. The recent extension of Germany’s GHG quota law until 2040 is a landmark.
