Renewables are reshaping the global energy system – and Europe is not just following this trend, but helping to drive it. Last year, 47% of the EU’s electricity was generated from renewable sources. The increase over the past decades has been steady, significant, and impressive. A clear sign that these technologies have become both mature and cost-effective. But as the amount of renewable energy in the system grows – alongside rising electrification – the more urgent it becomes to view the energy transition holistically. That means not simply building out renewables for their own sake, but also the infrastructure and technologies that underpin a resilient energy system: grids, batteries, and flexible generation capacity. All with a clear focus on cost-efficiency and market-based decarbonisation – with the EU ETS as, and remaining, the tool of choice to deliver it. Translating this into action means adapting key parts of the energy system. Europe’s well performing electricity market design must be maintained and supplemented with proven mechanisms such as capacity markets. At the same time, building up domestic clean tech supply chains is essential. Replacing dependency on fossil fuel imports with a dependency on clean tech imports is not a solution. If we get this right, it’s how we turn Europe’s progress in the energy transition into lasting impact.

Negative electricity prices are becoming a defining feature of Europe’s energy markets, particularly in countries with high solar PV penetration. In 2024, the Dutch power market alone saw more than 450 hours of negative prices, including some of the lowest levels on the continent. ☀️   This trend is challenging both merchant and subsidised projects, as many schemes now suspend support during negative price periods. For investors, this increases financial risk and complicates decision-making. At #IntersolarEurope2025, #SinengElectric and ​BELECTRIC GmbH​ officially entered into a strategic cooperation agreement for the deployment of Sineng’s PV solutions at a solar farm in the United Kingdom. The signing ceremony, attended by senior executives from both companies, marked a significant step in our joint commitment to accelerating the nation’s energy transition. Global renewable energy investor Nofar Energy recently secured the financing for a standalone battery energy storage (BESS) project in Stendal, Saxony-Anhalt – the largest of its kind developed in Germany to date. With a capacity of 209 megawatt hours, this project will stabilize the local power grid and drive forward the expansion of renewable energies in Germany. DNV is proud to have supported Nofar Energy and NORD/LB in the technical due diligence process for this landmark battery project. Our expertise in technical assessment and risk management has helped to secure the successful financing and implementation of this project. Dear Photovoltaic Enthusiasts, I would like to reflect on how the past year, 2024, unfolded in the photovoltaics sector and share my personal expectations for the year ahead.☀️ At this time last year, we predicted market acceleration driven by a reduction in administrative burdens and a decrease in panel prices, which we expected to persist for several consecutive years.  We were partially correct; however, preliminary data from across Europe indicate a slower pace than anticipated: while the market continues to grow, it has expanded “only” by approximately 10%, with net additions reaching 65.5 GW per year.  Predicting 2025 is challenging. The change in the U.S. administration will undoubtedly influence renewable industries worldwide. Our perspective is cautiously optimistic: we believe that a significant influx of panels originally intended for the U.S. market may eventually reach European markets at lower prices. However, it remains uncertain to what extent potential rollbacks of renewable policies in the U.S. might impact EU policies. That said, we remain positive, as our pipeline for this year is filled with exciting projects. Beyond our standard offerings, we have expanded into delivering EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) services for PV and BESS (battery energy storage systems) in the Czech Republic and Germany. On the international front, our projects in Ireland are progressing well, and we see the Irish market as highly promising for further expansion. Additionally, we successfully completed projects in Belgium and Germany during the last quarter.
