❓How can Extended Producer Responsibility (#EPR) schemes truly accelerate Europe’s circular economy? ♻️ As member of the European Circular Economy Stakeholder Platform, EuRIC has co-drafted a new White Paper on EPR schemes together with the Economic Incentives Leadership Group. Titled “EPR schemes. Current state and recommendations for improvement,” the paper maps today’s regulatory landscape and functioning of EPR while presenting 8 actionable recommendations for their improvement and expansion. Key recommendations include: ✅ Giving recyclers & waste managers a seat in PROs’ governance ✅ Reflecting the full environmental & social costs of products ✅ Combating free-riding effectively ✅ Ensuring transparent & efficient tender procedures ✅ Harmonising EPR rules across the EU ✅ Supporting eco-modulation of fees ✅ Integrating EPR with other economic policy tools ✅ Fully applying the polluter-pays principle (via Art. 8a WFD) Clear recommendations. 🌍 New York Climate Week just wrapped up, and it was one of the largest yet. Record attendance showed both urgency and challenge. Much of the debate centered around China’s climate targets: as traditional actors fade, global collaboration is becoming more fragmented, with multiple crises competing for attention. We observe that many organizations are facing resource pressure, even downsizing sustainability teams. While sustainability teams are under pressure, science says 1.5°C is slipping out of reach. The crisis isn’t slowing down and neither will we. In this environment, those who continue to who keep driving this agenda, deliver on commitments, and make real progress will not only help close the climate gap but will also gain a decisive long-term edge over innovation and adoption of new solutions. Yes, the challenge is steep, but we do not have any alternative to action and opportunities are undeniable.

The European Commission has officially adopted a recommendation on a voluntary sustainability reporting standard for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Developed by EFRAG, the Commission’s technical advisory body, the VSME standard offers SMEs a streamlined, consistent framework to respond to sustainability information requests from larger companies and financial institutions subject to mandatory reporting under the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (#CSRD). This adoption aligns with the earlier Omnibus I simplification package (February 2025), which proposed i.e. raising the CSRD reporting threshold to companies with more than 1000 employees, effectively excluding most SMEs from mandatory sustainability disclosures. What’s new? 📑 The VSME standard formalises voluntary ESG reporting as the go-to framework for most SMEs, helping them avoid burdensome and fragmented data demands from value chain partners. 🚧 It introduces a clear “value-chain cap” limiting the sustainability information larger companies can require from SMEs, preventing endless ESG data fishing expeditions. 🏗️ The VSME will serve as the foundation for a future voluntary reporting standard under the Omnibus package. However, some adjustments may occur depending on final legislative agreements and further simplifications in the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (#ESRS). 🧰 EFRAG also supports SMEs through a dedicated VSME Ecosystem, offering educational resources and tools to ease voluntary sustainability reporting.
