Projects got shelved. Budgets frozen. The irony is stark. The traditional parts business keeps running. The software future gets cut. Why this matters for tech leaders: German engineering built their reputation on precision hardware. Moving to software required massive cultural shifts, new talent, different development cycles. They made the leap. The market didn’t show up. Now 3,800 German jobs disappear by 2027. Engineers who retrained for software careers face unemployment. This isn’t about Bosch being slow or wrong. They moved fast on digital transformation. The issue: automotive OEMs themselves are struggling with the transition economics. When your customers pause innovation budgets, supplier software teams become expendable. The broader signal matters.
