Exactly one week ago, I was honored to join the b° future festival in Bonn. A festival that blends journalism, civic engagement, and constructive dialogue in a way I deeply believe in. Over the course of the event, I had the pleasure of moderating and contributing to several sessions that pushed boundaries, challenged assumptions, and explored how journalism can better serve society.
In one session, “Rethinking Conflict Coverage: Lessons from the Middle East and Beyond,” I shared the stage with Alina Živanović and Konstantinos Antonopoulos. We examined how to move beyond reductive narratives of violence and instead surface stories of resilience, voices on the margins, and pathways toward reconciliation.
In another, titled “Beyond the Scroll: Combating News Fatigue in Crisis Reporting,” I teamed up with Borja Díaz-Merry, Alina Živanović and Sebastian Katthöver to dive into techniques for sustaining engagement without overwhelming audiences from interactive explainers to formats that invite participation and reflection.
Finally, alongside Steven Oldengarm, I co-led “Breaking Free: Reimagining Social Media Strategies for Public Service Media.” We considered how public broadcasters might reclaim distinctive voice and values in global digital spaces, even as those same spaces tend to reward sensationalism over depth.
Beyond my own contributions, I was inspired by the richness of the entire program. The b° future festival offered over 190 events and brought together more than 300 speakers from more than 25 countries. The festival is designed not just for media professionals, but for all citizens: half of its sessions are free and open to the public, with the aim of bridging the gap between journalism and public dialogue.
What struck me most was the intentional spirit behind the festival. It doesn’t just ask what journalism is; it asks for whom, why, and how. It encourages stepping outside familiar circles, engaging with new perspectives, and embracing constructive forms of debate.
I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the entire Bonn Institute team for putting together such a meaningful, ambitious, and well executed event. It was a privilege to participate, exchange ideas with so many brilliant voices, and be part of this movement toward journalism that widens trust and fosters connection.
Thank you again to all my co-speakers and to everyone who attended, asked challenging questions, and joined in conversations long after the sessions ended. I already look forward to what’s next.
