Data are key to inform migration governance, improve programming and promote a better public understanding of migration. Timely data on migration are often scarce, making it difficult for decision-makers to develop effective migration policies. Even when migration statistics do exist, policymakers may not make full use of them, because data are often scattered between different stakeholders and between different countries. Sharing data effectively is often just as important as collecting data. Poor presentation of migration data can contribute to misperceptions about migration, and can distort public opinion. Better analysis and communication of the data are needed to promote a balanced debate on migration issues.

In 2024, nearly 3,500 migrants died or went missing across the Middle East and North Africa. That’s almost 40% of global migrant fatalities. This new paper, developed by IOM Regional Data Hub (MENA) introduces a Route-Based Approach to #MissingMigrants—a framework that views migration as a full journey rather than a single event. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, over a million people have returned from displacement abroad, making up nearly one in four of all returnees. IOM’s Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) findings show shifting demographics, lower employment rates, and significant gaps in access to services among those returning from abroad. Many face heightened vulnerability and risk of re-displacement. Continuing the conversation from #IFMS2025, our session on mobility trends into and out of Ukraine shed light on the complexity of return dynamics amid protracted crisis. “Many Ukrainians travel in temporary or cyclical movements across the border. According to our Crossing Back surveys, 92% of movements into Ukraine in the second half of 2024 were characterised by short-term stays or temporary returns,” said Erin Autumn Neale from IOM. Understanding these patterns is essential for shaping policies and assistance that meet people where they are—often in transition. Today’s update from #IFMS2025. The presenters in the parallel session “Migration anticipation and preparedness: recent methodological advances” presented inspiring work on predict migration flows data using a variety of novel methodologies. But I was struck by something Tuba Bircan said in her presentation: “Big data is nothing without traditional data.” I got chills when she said that. In a world where everyone is chasing the newest AI technology, it can be hard to advocate for the labor-intensive work of collecting data. It’s something everyone wants, and very few people are interested in funding. But AI and LLMs need that data to work. We have to keep collecting the data, like Derek Groen said, no matter how ropey the funding gets. Because one day everyone will once again realize how important it is. It was my absolute pleasure to present at #IFMS2025 in Malmö this afternoon. I presented on IOM - UN Migration ‘s Missing Migrants Project: Methods, Data, and Routes to Europe. It was such a pleasure to discuss the issues of data collection and analysis with Laura Bartolini, Alejandra Rodríguez Sánchez, Ivona Todorovska and Claire Healy. Thank you for the inspiring conversation! The questions from the audience touched on the impact of policies on migration, improving data collection regionally, and the importance of duplication in data collection. Duplication is near and dear to my heart, as the statistical methodology I’m learning about, Multiple Systems Estimation, relies on exploiting differences between (essentially) efforts to collect data that have been duplicated by different organizations to estimate the hidden population of migrant deaths. #missingmigrants #nomoredeaths #humanrights #migration #mse #statistics
