Politeness Strategies Between English Department Students at Dharma Andalas University

Descriptive qualitative analysis is used in this study. A discourse between students studying English literature serves as the research's data source. Data retrieval through the refer technique. This is followed by an open-ended, participatory manner. Data were gathered by recording discussions between Andalas Dharma University English literature students. The study's findings indicate that students of English literature frequently employ sentences that are followed by a request sentence in their interactions with other students of the same subject.The study's findings indicate that students of English Department frequently employ sentences that are followed by a request sentence in their interactions with other students of the same subject. Positive politeness is the most commonly utilized kind. This suggests that the English literature students communicate with a high degree of civility. Positive politeness is most commonly utilized. Finding the underlying implicatures in the conversations between fathers and sons found in the Qu... more Finding the underlying implicatures in the conversations between fathers and sons found in the Quran is the main objective of this study. It seeks to explore the hidden meanings in these exchanges and clarify the many implicatures. The Qur'an provides the qualitative and descriptive data used in this study. An observational approach is used to acquire the data, with the help of note-taking strategies and non-participant observations. The data analysis is done using the pragmatic Padan identity method along with the Determinant Element Separation Technique. To ensure a full understanding of the results, the findings are presented through an informal method. Two different types of implicatures are present, according to the results of the analysis of implicatures in the dialogic verses between father and sons of the Quran: general implicatures, and specialised implicatures. These come up in both general and focused conversations equally. Each of the dialogic verses between father and sons in the Quran contains a wide variety of interpretations, as shown by the examination of latent meanings.

This study aims to determine the pattern of intercultural communication and the inhibiting factor... more This study aims to determine the pattern of intercultural communication and the inhibiting factors of the intercultural communication process in inter-ethnic marriages of Nikmatul Rasidah and her husband, Paul. The theory used is the theory of interpersonal communication. The method used in this study is qualitative with a descriptive approach, with data collection through interviews and direct observation. The research subject is Nikmatul Rasidah and Paul by using triangulation credibility test. Based on the results of research conducted, it is known: (a) the pattern of intercultural communication applied by this couple is tolerance, being open to each other, giving in to each other, telling each other, respecting, understanding, and learning the language of each other to maintain harmony in their household. (b) barriers to communication are influenced by differences in language, behavior and habits, cultural background, social prejudice or stereotypes.

It seeks to analyze the various types of verbal humor, particularly in Ellen DeGeneres's program with Jackie Chan. To achieve this, Shade's theory will be used to explore types of verbal humor, while Attardo's theory will be employed to analyze the Knowledge Resources (KRs) from GTVH, including Script Opposition (SO), Language (LA), Logical Mechanism (LM), Target (TA), Situation (SI), and Narrative Strategy (NS). In addition, the authors utilized Sudaryanto's theory along with qualitative and descriptive approaches to accomplish the study's objectives. The authorss used a qualitative approach that began with data from transcripts and involved data collection, analysis, and interpretation. According to the authors's research, there are 26 various types of verbal humor in Ellen De-Generes' show with Jackie Chan in episodes 148 and 154. Satire was the most frequent type of verbal humor, occurring six times, followed by jokes, anecdotes, sarcasm, and riddles, which happened three times, and tall tales and wit, which appeared twice. The analysis was done step-by-step following the GTVH's (KRs) order to investigate verbal humor at its core.

" In conducting the analysis, the results obtained with the research method used is a qualitative descriptive method. In collecting the data this research used heed method, this method followed by the simak bebas libat cakap technique and the analysis method used the Agih method and followed by Bagi Unsur Langsung technique. After doing the analysis, it was found that 51 data were found in the video. As a result, 51 data with the types of Outer Code-Mixing is dominant with a percentage of 100%, while in the inner no data is found. In the forms, there are 21 data on words, 17 data on phrases, 3 data on hybrids, 1 data on repetition words, 2 on idioms, and 11 data on clauses.

This study uses the code-mixing theory of Nababan, (1984). This research includes a qualitative description. This study used the Independent See-Engage-talk Technique (TSBLC) and Technique Direct Element (BUL) to analyze the data. This study focuses on the type of code-mixing using theory Suwito's (1983), and the form of code-mixing using theory Suwito's (1995). After conducting the analysis, there were sixty-six (66) data found in the code-mixing type and fifty-seven (57) data in the code-mixing form. According to Suwito, there are two types of code-mixing, namely Inner and Outer. After being analyzed, it was found that the Inner code-mixing in eight (8) Saykoji song lyrics was 15 (22.72%) while the outer code-mixing was found to be 51 (72.27%). College Students’ Attitude Towards English Variety in English Learning

The aim of this study is to explain types of English variations uttered by some college students who are considered as respondents in this study and their attitudes toward the variations of language that appear to their speech during the teaching-learning process. This research is applying mixed-methods, the combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. The data to be presented in this research are some college students at Dharma Andalas University and Andalas University by distributing some questionnaires and also interviews. The method of data analysis is divided into two types, first, methods which related to the correlation of external language objects with a non-linguistic element called correlation method or method of matching, and secondly, methods which related to surgical, processing or internal verbal tampering called the method of operation or distribution method. From the questionnaire and interviews that have been done, 69% of the respondents stated that their English variety is American English, 6% British English and 22% Englonesian variety. Besides, 90% of respondents accept their variety and 10% of respondents rejected their variety. Thus, it is concluded that the respondents aware that English has changed nowadays and some of them rejected the variety and some of them accept it as a new symbol of global English.

English is not used as a language of everyday communication but is used as one of the foreign languages studied at several universities in Indonesia. A phenomenon that often occurs among students when learning English is that they hesitate to practice their English in class, so it slows down their ability to communicate in English. Based on this phenomenon, the authors are interested in examining several things, including 1. Students' speaking problems in class. 2. The most effective activities in improving students' speaking ability. This research is descriptive by using a qualitative method. The data is collected by distributing several questionnaires to students and direct observation in the English class. The result of this research is 29% of participants did not want to practice English in front of the class because of fear of being a mistake and 29% of participants felt embarrassed if there is a mistake.

This is a qualitative descriptive study. The data collected consists of the requests made by students and lecturers. The results of data analysis contained in students’ sentences consist of words used to ask for permission. These words may be used as much as 40 percent in the sentences of students when making requests to their lecturers. Also, greeting, expressions such as “allow me to...” and “let&#39;s” are also used as much as 13% by students in their sentences to their lecturers. Only one data shows words to ask for help and make apologies are used by students.

Diagnosing Effect of English Novels on Augmenting EFL Learners' Language Skills and Competencies

English novels add new dimensions to augmenting the second language or foreign language learners'... more English novels add new dimensions to augmenting the second language or foreign language learners' skills and competencies. However, English novels have little roles in the Indonesian ELT context and gradually fade away from Indonesian EFL learning's programs today. This study, therefore, aimed at diagnosing the effects of English novels on augmenting EFL learners' language skills and competencies. This research entailed a qualitative research approach. The English Department (ED) students numbering 20 were the research participants. The interviews, focus groups, and participant observation were the key techniques of collecting data. The 1994 Miles and Huberman model of data display, data reduction, and conclusion were stages of analyzing the data. The findings show that reading English novels extensively and intensively develop the ED students' language skills of higher thinking skills, vocabulary acquisition, and productive-receptive skills of English and linguistic and pragmatic competencies. In conclusion, English novels discover a love of the language, practically improve and develop the 2nd-year ED students' exposure to English language and lead them to communicate like native English speakers.

Off record, the strategy is one of the five strategies. This strategy is discussed for the use of the language used in the forms of direct.

The object of research is strategies off the record that describes implicatures politeness in a famous talk show in America, namely, "Oprah Winfrey Show". The data were taken using methods refer to refer techniques involved free conversation, where the author was not involved in the dialogue that occurs because the data is taken from the TV show, recording technique with the aid of a recorded tape. Furthermore, the authors use the technique CAAT by way of transcribing talk show back in the form of transcription orthographic. This analysis uses methods equivalent to pragmatic look at the role of external factors of language, especially the factor of interlocutors on selection strategies used off record.

The results showed that the context of the situation and the violations of the maxim of conversation will influence the choice of strategies used off record. However, there are some cases when this option does not follow the rules. This is because of other factors that come into play in a conversation such as intonation. implicatures appear generally in the form of affirmation that is used in polite. In one sentence found two or more strategy off record selected speakers.
