  • “El Fasher has become a devastating humanitarian crisis embedded within one of the largest and most overlooked emergencies of this century. The global community cannot continue to ignore the scale of atrocities committed against the populations of Darfur or the extent of the unaddressed humanitarian needs of these besieged or displaced populations” - Paul Byars, DRC Sudan Country Director

  • Join our thematic session as we explore how #AnticipatoryAction in #FragilityConflictAndViolence contexts is designed to anticipate the impacts of conflict and displacement. The session will showcase diverse agency approaches to conflict-sensitive forecasting, as they also delve into the question of whether harmonizing trigger models is feasible or even desirable in volatile environments. Participants will engage in practical discussions on early warning systems, collaboration without standardization, and innovations that bridge data with community insight in the context of #FCV and #Displacement. We are grateful to the Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken for supporting and championing such innovation and learning which can help strengthen humanitarian action broadly.

🔴 Sudan update  260,000 people in El Fasher, #Sudan, have been living under siege for more than 18 months - with no access to food, water or health services. Since the fall of the city, we are continuing to see a new level of violence including verified reports of mass killings, detentions and abuses.  DRC has been operating in Sudan since 2004, and we are deeply concerned about the consistent violations of International Humanitarian Law currently observed in Darfur. Delivering humanitarian aid to the people of Sudan is not only restricted, limiting our ability to help people in need, but also extremely dangerous: 121 aid workers have been killed since the start of the conflict. Through our work with local partners, we are responding to the displaced populations of Darfur in #Tawila, the nearest accessible city to El Fasher. This includes assisting the most recent arrivals from the recent violence in El-Fasher, many of whom have arrived showing clear signs of abuse indicating the inhumanity of the lengthy siege. Much of the displaced population of Tawila include women and children who have been continually exposed to high risks, including gender-based violence, family separation, and exploitation. The most recent numbers of arrivals in Tawila are much lower than expected - given the number of civilians reported to be trapped in El Fasher during the siege. This is an alarming indication of populations that are unable to achieve safe passage and who may remain detained, trapped in the city, or possibly killed while attempting to flee.  For the thousands that have managed to reach Tawila, the conditions in the receiving sites remain dire and the available humanitarian assistance is overstretched. Sites are overcrowded with unsafe shelter conditions and inadequate water and sanitation provision. Protection services are inadequate for the scale of displaced in the city – including psychosocial support mechanisms and protective spaces required for gender-based violence responses. DRC is scaling up operations through direct presence as well as working with local partners to address urgent needs in water and sanitation, shelter and protection. We also ask the UN Member States and the international community to put pressure on all parties at war to ensure:  ▶️Immediate safe passage for all civilians trying to leave El Fasher  ▶️Safe, rapid and unimpeded humanitarian access   ▶️Compliance with international humanitarian law, protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure The scale and complexity of needs far exceed current response capacities. A principled, well-resourced, and coordinated response is essential to safeguard lives.

  • In the Mandera Triangle—a region located between Somalia, Kenya, and Ethiopia that has long faced recurring tensions and conflict, a cross-border network of women is actively working to advance women's inclusion in peacebuilding and mediation processes in this fragile landscape.  In contexts where decision-making spaces have long been male-dominated, a 130-member forum of women creates safe, practical platforms for women to participate in cross-border dialogue, conflict prevention interventions, and strengthening inter-communal and state relations in areas affected by inter-clan tensions and other security risks. The intervention, supported by the DRC-led Building Opportunities for Resilience in the Horn of Africa (BORESHA-NABAD) consortium, is catalysing women’s leadership in reshaping local peace processes, ensuring that their voices inform agreements and reconciliation efforts. ▶️ Cross-border women's forum at a glance: • 130 members from Kenya, Somalia, and Ethiopia border communities • Women-led dialogues supported in informing community peace agreements and local safety actions • Increased representation of women in peace and DRR committees, and in the design and monitoring of peacebuilding and development initiatives As today we mark 25 years since the UNSC Women Peace Security resolution 1325, we invite governments, civil society, donors, and the private sector to invest in women-led peacebuilding. At DRC, we believe inclusive peace is sustainable peace. #WPS1325 #WomenPeaceSecurity #InclusivePeace #DRC #CrossBorderPeace #ManderaTriangle #WomenInPeacebuilding

  • Following the remarkable success of the Fair Recycling Project 1.0 in Kenya, recently shortlisted for the 2025 AidEx Development 2030 ‘Sustainable Initiative of the Year’ Award, the Danish Refugee Council is proud to announce the launch of Fair Recycling Project 2.0, funded by The Coca-Cola Foundation. Building on the achievements of Phase 1.0, which formalized over 4,000+ waste pickers, created 2,100+ jobs, and recycled more than 1,075.76 metric tons of plastic, the new phase will scale operations in Nairobi and Kakuma and expand to Greater Kampala City in Uganda. Running through July 2027, this phase will collaborate with more recycling companies and private sector actors to strengthen a more sustainable waste management ecosystem. It will seek to expand market access for waste pickers to increase the amount of recyclables that are collected. Key goals of Fair Recycling Project 2.0: ▶️ Recycle 30,000 tonnes of plastic per year ▶️ Support 3,000 informal waste pickers (50% of whom are refugees) ▶️ Improve wages and working conditions ▶️ Enhance sustainable livelihoods and promote inclusive green business among refugees and host communities in Kenya and Uganda By leveraging plastic waste management and circular economy practices, the Fair Recycling Project 2.0 aims to continue turning waste into value, creating opportunities, protecting the environment, and advancing a fairer and more inclusive economy across the African region.

  • We are saddened by the tragic loss of five Sudanese Red Crescent Society volunteers in Bara, North Kordofan #Sudan and very concerned about the three volunteers who are still missing. Once again, we grieve humanitarian workers attacked while delivering life saving aid in service of their communities. Once again we repeat, humanitarian workers should never be a target. Our deepest condolences go out to their families, friends, and colleagues, and we hold in our thoughts the three volunteers who remain missing. In this moment of sorrow, we stand in solidarity with the Sudanese Red Crescent Society and the whole humanitarian sector. #NotATarget #SudaneseRedCrescent #InternationalHumanitarianLaw
