Global initiative enhancing coordination & communication between diaspora, local & institutional humanitarian actors.

Om os

Since 2015, our mission at DEMAC is to improve coordination and communication among diaspora organizations involved in humanitarian assistance and between diaspora organizations, local actors and institutional humanitarian actors. We further aim to increase visibility and engagement for diaspora organizations in the humanitarian system through evidence based research, workshops, conferences and networking about diaspora engagement in humanitarian crises around the world. DEMAC is part of the Danish Refugee Council. We are funded by diverse donors, such as DANIDA, H2H Network, Dutch MFA, USAID, etc. and have been working with IOM, GIZ and other institutions to enhance knowledge around diaspora humanitarian engagement.

Panellists from diverse backgrounds explored the successes, barriers, and future directions of 𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐚-𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. Diaspora engagement was recognised as a crucial part of the humanitarian system, challenging the common assumption that diaspora actors should simply “fit” into existing structures. Instead, their real strength lies in their complementarity to the traditional aid system — bringing agility, trust, and direct collaboration with local actors, driven by deep connections to their home countries. A heartfelt thank you to our inspiring speakers: Andrii KUZMYN, General Manager Bevar Ukraine, Cinzia De Santis, Founder and Chairwoman Healing Venezuela, Fadi Al-Dairi, Regional Director Hand in Hand for Aid and Development, Francesca Bonelli, Head of Partnerships UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, and Reshma K. Adatia, Director of Engagement, ICVA Network. We look forward to the next decade with DEMAC — continuing to amplify the power of diaspora engagement as a driving force for more inclusive, locally rooted, and transnational humanitarian action.  #diaspora #AidEx #HumanitarianResponse #HumanitarianAid #diasporahumanitarianism

Thank you Burcu Mavis for facilitation and our fantastic speakers from UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, Aseel, HesabPay and University of Geneva. 💲 The second session presented findings from DEMAC’s recent research in Afghanistan on #innovativefinancing models and tools, exploring diaspora financing flows and their impact in the aftermath of the Herat earthquake in 2023 and amid the recent forced returns from Iran in 2025. • 🧠 Today, on #WorldMentalHealthDay, we recognize the vital role mental health plays in humanitarian contexts — not only for those affected by crises, but also for those offering support. Across the globe, #diaspora actors are often among the first to respond when crises strike. Yet supporting others while safeguarding their own well-being remains one of their greatest challenges. At DEMAC - Diaspora Emergency Action & Coordination, we believe that caring for others begins with caring for ourselves. Supporting the mental health and well-being of diaspora responders is essential to sustaining their incredible work. That’s why we’re excited to announce an upcoming resource: 📘 𝐃𝐄𝐌𝐀𝐂 𝐏𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐆𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐞 – 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐏𝐬𝐲𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐀𝐢𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐟-𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞 This guide will help diaspora actors: 1️⃣ Understand key mental health and psychosocial support concepts 2️⃣ Apply practical tools for Psychological First Aid (PFA) 3️⃣ Integrate self-care as a foundation for resilience and effective response Explore our resource library for more: https://lnkd.in/eDfGkzky #WorldMentalHealthDay #DiasporaEngagement #PsychologicalFirstAid
