💥The Immune System: Friend or Foe Our annual meeting in Immunology and Infectious Diseases has just been kicked off at Konventum in Helsingør, Denmark, and theme has never been more relevant than it is today! 🏅 The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2025 has just been awarded Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell and Shimon Sakaguchi for specifically their groundbreaking discoveries concerning peripheral immune tolerance that prevents the immune system from harming the body. The laureates identified the immune system’s security guards, regulatory T cells, which prevent immune cells from attacking our own body. “Their discoveries have been decisive for our understanding of how the immune system functions and why we do not all develop serious autoimmune diseases,” said the chair of the Nobel Committee. 🎯 SO ... it is with great pleasure, that Head of Graduate Programme in Immunology and Infectious Diseases,  Professor Mogens Holst Nissen and PhD Coordinator of the Programme, Professor Lea Barfod today can welcome almost 100 PhD-students and international speakers to three days of inspiring talks about our powerful immune system that protects us from thousands of different microbes trying to invade our bodies.   Curious? 📍NEW DIRECTOR at the Costerton Biofilm Center Today, 1 October 2025, Professor Michael Givskov will step down as Director of the Costerton Biofilm Center (CBC) at Department of Immunology and Microbiology (ISIM), University of Copenhagen and Professor Thomas Bjarnsholt will assume the role 🎯 The Department of Immunology and Microbiology (ISIM) extends its sincere gratitude to Michael for his pivotal role in establishing CBC in 2013 - https://biofilm.ku.dk/ - and for his dedication and outstanding leadership over the years. Under his guidance, the Costerton Biofilm Center has become a unique, internationally recognized, interdisciplinary research hub dedicated to advancing knowledge in chronic bacterial infections. ISIM warmly welcomes Thomas Bjarnsholt as the new Director. Having completed his PhD and postdoctoral studies under Michael’s supervision, Thomas went on to build an independent career, becoming Professor at the Department and an integral member of CBC for many years. Cancer treatment often fails because some cancer cells become resistant to drugs. A new study from LEO Foundation Skin Immunology Research Center (SIC), Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, UCPH has analyzed over 375,000 individual cancer cells to better understand how cancer evolves and adapts inside the body. "This research gives new hope," says Assistant Professor Terkild Brink Buus. "By identifying which cancer subclones dominate a patient’s body and how they react to infections and drugs, we can design smarter, more personalized treatments."
