International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI)
70% of poultry production cost is feed. For smallholder farmers, this is one of the biggest barriers to scaling up income and household nutrition. At the ILRI poultry facility in Addis Ababa, we are testing an innovative high-protein, locally producible feed - Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae. BSF are environmentally sustainable, converting organic waste into feed, and affordable for smallholder farmers. The use of insect-based feeds is growing across Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America. And with the right investments in research, regulation, and awareness, we can scale these solutions significantly in the years ahead. We invite governments, development partners, private sector, and academia to collaborate with us in scaling this innovation. Together, we can create poultry systems that are sustainable and resilient! With 75% of Ugandan farmers growing bananas, this release marks a critical step in strengthening food security and sustainable agriculture in the region. “In the open field, everything attacked my crops: heat, birds, rats. Since I've been producing in a polytunnel using hydroponics, nothing has been able to reach my produce,” says Mahmoud. A farmer in northern Kenya who is using hydroponics, a method of growing that uses water-based nutrients rather than soil to provide nourishment, Mahmoud produces vegetables in one of 40 greenhouses that have been constructed across three counties, as part of an initiative that is supported by the World Food Programme. Since the project launched, thousands of farmers like Mahmoud have been trained on how to grow in a way that allows them to increase yields, produce more efficiently, and continue to thrive in the face of the challenges that confront farmers faced by a changing climate.
