European Statistics Code of Practice: trust and quality

Reliable official statistics delivered by Eurostat in partnership with the national statistical authorities in the EU countries are the foundation of informed decision-making and public debate in the EU. Adopted by the European Statistical System Committee in 2005, the European Statistics Code of Practice sets out 16 principles covering the institutional environment, statistical processes, and statistical output of data production. These principles ensure that official statistics are professionally independent, objective, reliable, and accessible to all users, from policymakers to businesses and citizens

At the core of the Code of Practice is the principle of professional independence. It stipulates that national statistical authorities and Eurostat must operate free from political or external pressures.
