Summary

Research and experimental development (R&D) comprise creative and systematic work undertaken in order to increase the stock of knowledge – including knowledge of humankind, culture and society – and to devise new applications of available knowledge. R&D statistics play a central role in measuring the expenditure and the employment in R&D activities. The availability and quality of the R&D statistics are key to benchmarking the relation between investment in R&D expenditure and innovation. This is the first edition of the summary quality report of R&D statistics. It aims to provide users with relevant information on the quality of the R&D data disseminated in Eurostat’s online database under the Science and technology domain.
