  • 🌍 Today is World One Health Day! #OneHealth is an integrated, unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimise the health of people, animals and ecosystems, recognising that the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the wider environment are closely linked and interdependent. This week, Bax's Sofia Aivalioti is attending the One Sustainable Health FORUM in Lyon. Sofia had the opportunity to showcase the tangible implementation methods of the One Health Approach taken by the One Health 4 Cities [URBACT Network] during a panel discussion featuring insights from partner cities Lyon, Munich and Elefsina. Outlining the importance of One Health in cities, Sofia commented: "𝘊𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘺𝘴𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘖𝘯𝘦 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩 𝘈𝘱𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘢𝘤𝘩. On December 10th, the One Health 4 Cities [URBACT Network] will showcase its key outputs during a dedicated final conference in Brussels. During the conference, Sofia will share further results and findings from the Network, while cities involved will present their local implementations of One Health. Participants will also see a test and demo of the toolbox developed through the initiative and explore how to continue building healthier, more resilient and regenerative cities for all. ℹ️ More information: https://lnkd.in/dzKH9UeD

  • Every day, nurses across Europe lift, bend, and support patients — often pushing their bodies to the limit. Over time, this physical strain can lead to painful musculoskeletal injuries that force many to reduce hours or even leave the profession they love. The impact reaches far beyond the individual. These injuries are now a leading cause of staff shortages and early retirement, adding pressure to already overstretched #healthcare systems. With demand for healthcare steadily rising, protecting and retaining staff has never been more urgent. #Exoskeletons—wearable devices already used in logistics, agriculture, and manufacturing—are now showing great potential in healthcare. By reducing strain and supporting safer posture, they not only help nurses, but also other healthcare professionals and carers work more sustainably. Together with MSD-CARE partners HAWK - University of Applied Science and Arts (Germany), Roessingh Research and Development (the Netherlands), and the University of Galway (Ireland), we explored how wearable exoskeletons could protect healthcare workers. Focus groups showed these devices can ease lower-back stress, improve posture, and support daily tasks. But innovation is only useful if it works for real people, in the real world. That’s why we developed: ✅ An Exoskeleton Adoption Protocol to guide healthcare teams in choosing the right solutions. ✅ An infographic with actionable insights for industry, ensuring devices are hygienic, comfortable, and accepted by staff and patients. • 🏆 We're thrilled with the news that #Rotterdam municipality has made it to the final of the #EIC's 2026 European Capital of Innovation Awards! This recognition celebrates cities at the forefront of research, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Bax is proud to have supported Rotterdam in preparing its application, which was submitted last June, as well as its pitch to the jury on Monday. Over the years, we've worked with the municipality, the port authority, Erasmus University Rotterdam, Delft University of Technology, Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, Inholland University of Applied Sciences, and many others. Together, we’ve shaped strategies, programmes, and projects focused on #sustainability, the #energy and #materials transition, the #bioeconomy, #urbanmobility, #circularity, and #health - both locally and across Europe - through initiatives including: BRAVE - Building Blueprints for Regional Clean Energy Scale-up – developing a €150M cleantech investment pipeline across seven regional energy systems. Gleam NSR|Interreg North Sea Region – advancing policies and governance for sustainable urban logistics through multi-stakeholder collaboration. • 🗑️ Every EU citizen produces around 300 kg of #biowaste each year - equivalent to four average-sized washing machines. It’s one of the largest municipal waste streams on the continent. Despite its potential as a renewable local feedstock for new materials and soil nutrients, most of it ends up landfilled or incinerated. That’s a massive missed opportunity for the #circulareconomy. The HOOP Project explored how cities can turn this challenge into a local bioeconomy engine — creating new materials, nutrients, and green jobs from what we currently throw away. ♻️ To better understand the wider challenges, the project developed the HOOP Circularity Label, which assesses a city’s performance across four key dimensions: Policy, Society, Consumption, and Waste Management. The data generated from the cities that completed the label show a mix of strong progress and ongoing gaps. In this new Bax article, Mafalda Di Palma highlights the key policy and investment steps needed to unlock biowaste’s full potential ➡️ https://lnkd.in/em7V8Sin Biowaste isn’t a problem to solve. It’s a circular economy engine waiting to be activated. 💡 Want to learn more? Send us a message and we'll put you in touch with our circularity experts. #UrbanBiowaste #EUInnovation #Bioeconomy

  • Introducing more green space into dense urban areas is a powerful way to create healthier, more sustainable, and more enjoyable cities. But how do you green areas that are grey, full of traffic, short on space – and where change often meets resistance? Our Liveable Cities team is tackling exactly that challenge through GreenDense – an initiative piloting an innovative green infrastructure “mosaic” approach, where Bax supports six cities to: 🌱 Maximise limited space and strengthen green connectivity by integrating multiple small-scale green infrastructures into dense urban environments. From turning a disused industrial road in Brest Métropole into a green corridor for pedestrians and cyclists to planting a tile garden on a residential street in Stad Mechelen. ✅ Develop and implement urban greening solutions in collaboration with local communities that reflect each city’s unique cultural and environmental context. These small but significant interventions also advance broader policy goals – from public health and active mobility to youth engagement. 🤝 Foster transnational collaboration by connecting cities facing similar challenges across Europe with each other and with expert organisations. Last month, this collaboration came to life in Brest, where partners shared experiences, insights and inspiration on what urban greening solutions have so far worked (and haven't!) in their cities. "This initiative is an excellent example of the importance of European collaboration - the greening of small spaces in one city might not change much but put together, across multiple cities, they form a mosaic of green that creates real impact." - Sol Gustafsson Storvik, Innovation Consultant at Bax and GreenDense Project Lead.
