Today we are attending the #MARBEFES project conference on climate change, biodiversity, and the relationship between humans and marine environment. The programme is structured around three thematic areas, where LifeWatch ERIC's presentation is focused on the Mediterranean Sea. 🌊 🧠 The Sea in Public Consciousness (perceptions of the sea, social expectations, and cultural narratives); 🌊 🎨 The Sea in Art (how art communicates marine issues and acts as a universal language); 🌊 💡 The Sea as an Opportunity and a Resource (marine ecosystem services, resource valuation, and innovative uses of the marine environment). Thank you Institute of Oceanology Polish Academy of Sciences for organising such an interesting event! 👏 👉 Learn more about MARBEFES: https://lnkd.in/dyYX7e5p

How can Europe's research institutions collaborate to deal with global issues such as food safety, water scarcity, and biodiversity loss? Coordinated by LifeWatch ERIC, European RIs have stated their commitment to transform scientific cooperation into actionable policy and robust innovation. In the Crete Declaration, Europe’s leading biodiversity, ecology and engineering communities offer a unified, systemic response to global challenges through robust science and evidence-based insights. The Declaration is published in a policy brief in the RIO journal: https://lnkd.in/dBpm-4Fp This policy brief is the latest contribution to the LifeWatch ERIC's Strategic Working Plan Outcomes open-science collection in the RIO journal, a one-stop access point to the most important deliverables by the research infrastructure consortium. 🔥 Our new Chief Technology Officer is already in action! We are pleased to introduce Anne Fouilloux, LifeWatch ERIC’s new CTO, present today at the #EOSCSymposium. In the coming days, we will formally introduce her and share more about her vision and priorities for leading and coordinating the development of our technological infrastructure. For now, we extend a warm welcome as she begins her new role. 🍀 At the #EOSC Symposium, Anne is addressing the challenge of breaking down disciplinary silos in image analysis, demonstrating how ongoing community explorations can be documented through #FAIR Implementation Profiles (#FIPs) via the OSCARS project’s FIESTA initiative (FAIR Image Ecosystem for Shared Tools & Analysis). 👉 An approach that enables early cross-domain collaboration before new silos form! We look forward to sharing more from her very soon, and to seeing the impact of her leadership in the coming months. 💪

Today at the #EOSC Symposium, the European Open Science Cloud took a major step toward its consolidation as Europe’s #research and #innovation data space. The 14 coordinators of the EOSC Federation’s first wave of EOSC Nodes joined EOSC Association President Klaus Tochtermann and Co-Chair of the EOSC Federation’s Build-up Group Bob Jones on the stage to introduce the EOSC Federation’s Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The agreement, to be signed by 13 candidate EOSC Nodes and EOSC-A, marks the culmination of eight months of hard work and coordination carried out on an in-kind basis by the dozens of European organisations standing behind the nodes. As champions of the European research community, these organisations—including Research Infrastructures, e-Infrastructures, and research-performing organisations—have established the technical and organisational foundations for the future of #OpenScience in Europe. The MoU ceremony served to close out a day dedicated to high-level discussions between European policy-makers and research community stakeholders on the future of EOSC. These were placed in the context of the afternoon’s debut of the EOSC Federation and a showcase of its scientific impact. ”What matters most is to keep the momentum, the ambition and the shared purpose that have brought us this far. So let’s seize this moment, let’s act together to complete [the EOSC Federation] fast and make it the backbone of Europe’s digital research and innovation ecosystem,” said Marc Lemaître, Director-General of the EC’s Directorate General for Research and Innovation, in the Symposium’s opening speech. Joining Lemaître on the Symposium’s opening day were Robbert Dijkgraaf, President-elect of the International Science Council, Maria Leptin, President of the European Research Council, and Mattias Björnmalm, PhD, Secretary General of EOSC-A founding member CESAER, together with DG RTD’s ERA & Innovation Acting Director Jean-David Malo, EOSC Steering Board Co-Chair Volker Beckmann from the French ministry of higher education, research and space, and Tochtermann. “This moment shows what shared stewardship of Europe’s research ecosystem can achieve. The EOSC Federation will not only connect technical infrastructures, but also people and principles in a corresponding social infrastructure,” said Tochtermann. 🍁 Kick-off of the Restore4Cs Autumn School 💧 From 3 to 6 November, the Autumn School 2025: “Modelling, Policy and Practice for Restored and Resilient Coastline” is taking place at ETC-UMA premises in Málaga, Spain! This training brings the Scientific Community as well as Decision and Policy Makers across Europe and beyond to advance knowledge on #coastal wetland restoration and its role in addressing climate and biodiversity challenges. The 4 days starts with the science training programme for the Scientific Community on coastal wetland ecosystems, showcasing their ecological importance and vulnerability. Through case studies of historical restoration initiatives, participants will gain a foundational understanding of the challenges and opportunities in wetland conservation. The event also features contributions from related EU projects and networks, including: 💧 ALFAWetlands – “Valuing Wetland Restoration: Citizens' Preferences Across Six EU Countries” 💭 WET HORIZONS – “Citizen Voices in Wetland Restoration” 🔬 Society of Wetland Scientists – European Chapter A promising start to a week of immersive policy and science-based training and collaborative learning, aimed at advancing more resilient and sustainable #wetland ecosystems throughout Europe. The week concludes with a field visit to a restored coastal wetland near the city where participants will explore real-world restoration and management approaches, gaining insights into the science behind greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting. The event is organized by LifeWatch ERIC with the support of partners within the framework of the RESTORE4Cs project, funded by the European Union. 🔗 Full programme and details: https://lnkd.in/dxSjSPwu #Restore4Cs #ETCUMA #WetlandRestoration #EUfunded #Biodiversity #Resilience #NatureBasedSolutions

Spooky, but fundamental for biodiversity 👻 Fear fades when we focus on function. Through a #biodiversity lens, “scary” becomes service: 🕷️ spiders & 🐝 wasps reduce crop pests (and many wasps also pollinate) 🦇 bats support agriculture by eating insects and, for some species, moving pollen and seeds 🪲 earwigs are nocturnal pest-controllers and scavengers that help keep gardens and orchards in balance Happy #Halloween from LifeWatch ERIC! 🎃 1 & 4. © Tomi Trilar, Slovenian Museum of Natural History - LifeWatch Slovenia 2. © Sónia Ferreira - LifeWatch Portugal 3. © Ant Türkmen - LifeWatch ERIC

Last summer, we gathered experts in Lecce to discuss the invisible cost of biodiversity loss, a crucial topic that will also be part of this year's European Conference of the Society for Benefit-Cost Analysis #SBCA2025. The conference promotes the use of benefit-cost analysis (#BCA) in science as a tool to inform policy and investment decisions. Under the leadership of Professor Dr. Phoebe Koundouri Resees, Research Laboratory AUEB director, the 2025 edition will explore methodological advances in BCA, environment, climate, and energy policy, health and social policy evaluation, and much more! 👉 https://lnkd.in/dTbXFY9k Society for Benefit-Cost Analysis Athens University of Economics and Business Resees, Research Laboratory AUEB
