👾 Hoy en Rural Hackers empiezan los Hacker Days. Llevamos bastante tiempo ideando este proyecto; hoy es una realidad. ¿Qué son los Hacker Days? Una vez al año organizamos un hackathon de 7 días para afrontar un reto concreto del rural con tecnología. Una necesidad real, una solución útil. Este año el foco es la gestión del agua en las zonas rurales. Este reto tiene nombres propios: Rosabel y Olga dedican unas 400 horas al año, de forma voluntaria, para que en nuestro pueblo el agua se gestione de manera óptima. Es un trabajo invisibilizado y muy complejo. Lo que haremos esta semana es sencillo de explicar y difícil de hacer bien: desarrollar una herramienta abierta y gratuita para facilitar la gestión del agua en los pueblos: lecturas y registros de depósitos, avisos de incidencias, mediciones, consumos y mantenimiento básico. Objetivo: ahorrar tiempo a quienes sostienen el sistema y evitar el desperdicio de agua. No vamos a arreglar el mundo en 7 días. Sí vamos a dejar una base sólida: código abierto, documentación clara, un piloto en Anceu y un plan de continuidad para que cualquiera pueda adaptarlo. Este proyecto nace de la colaboración entre Rural Hackers,TEIMAS , SiteGround, VIKO, ElevenYellow Pte. Ltd. , NEXT DIGITAL y Anceu Coliving. Detrás de cada nombre hay personas ilusionadas que suman programación, infraestructura, datos, diseño, desarrollo y comunicación para construir una solución abierta y útil que llegue a más pueblos. This 34th birthday was different 🎂✨ I got to celebrate it at WordCamp Europe in Basel, Switzerland one of the world’s biggest open-source events 🇨🇭 I’m usually not into big gatherings. At Rural Hackers, we focus on the small, the local, the close always with a global perspective. But WordCamp Europe is different. Within these massive events, you can find something special: micro-communities, or in other words, teams of people helping each other. Mine at #WCEU is made up of people who deeply believe that the future is built through collaboration. On Day 2, I had the chance to take the stage and speak about exactly that: 👉 The power of micro-communities and how they are transforming the WordPress ecosystem 👉 How small, focused groups are reshaping collaboration, impact, and open-source culture 💡 I also had the chance to listen to the talks of Héctor de Prada González and Benjamin Zekavica. The way they think, share, and stay grounded in community is something I deeply admire. 🌱 CRAB (Creative Habitat Community): an International Community for the Regeneration of Non-Urban Areas 🌍 From 12–15 May 2025 in the small town of Laconi, Sardinia, the first gathering of the CRAB spaces, co-funded by the European Union's Creative Europe Programme, took place. ✨ Hosted by Treballu, over 30 cultural operators, space managers, researchers, and institutional representatives from across Europe came together to spent 3 days sharing stories and speaking about the opportunities and challenges of building cultural infrastructure in rural and marginal areas. All participants quickly felt that it was more than an event — it was a turning point in collectively reimagine non-urban areas as places of creativity, community, and opportunity. 💬 We talked about: - The role of creative hubs in rural regeneration - Hosting residencies in off-the-beaten-path places - Building sustainable models for rural life - Tools, methods, and policy needs - Using alliances across borders and sectors What stood out most? The countryside is not a periphery. It is a resilient centre in the making — if we give it the tools to become one. RHHMWD Rural Hackers Has The Magazine We Once Dreamed Of! 🔥🔥🔥 When we envisioned Rural Hackers as a movement for revitalization of rural areas, we knew from the beginning that art had to play a big role. Why? Because we believe art connects people to a place/culture in the most direct, emotional, and meaningful way, art make bonds. Rural areas hold a deep well of cultural expressions, many of them kept alive through oral tradition. Art lives in the stories, the gestures, the songs, and the people who carry them forward. We dreamed of a magazine that could gather all those daily stories gather them, hold them, and put rural life, traditions, and people at the center. Not a portfolio of our projects, but a canvas where these voices could breathe. That’s why we opened our residencies to artists, at the very beginning with really limited budget. You know sometimes it’s hard to find the right framework to make it happen… In that very moment Goethe-Institut Brussels came through and supported us to make it real. And now… that dream is alive and printed. After an unforgettable summer with Cora Ashraf & Felicitas Döring, our resident artists through the Goethe-Institut Brussels program, we’re beyond thrilled to share with you the first-ever Rural Hackers magazine. And here comes the magic: Thanks to the support of Diputación de Pontevedra, we’ve printed 500 copies — 300 in English 200 in Galician, our own and unique language. This is more than a publication. It’s a love letter to the people we walk beside. It’s for everyone who believes that rural can be radical, and that collaboration still changes everything. We’re celebrating. ¿Cómo pasar de un gallinero automatizado fallido a un programa que cierra la brecha digital en el rural? Hace un par de años, en Rural Hackers, lanzamos un programa de voluntariado con un objetivo claro: que fuera realmente significativo más allá de rellenar horas. Gracias a la financiación de European Solidarity Corps (vía Injuve - Instituto de la Juventud de España), logramos que las personas voluntarias estuvieran cubiertas económicamente y contaran con mentorías técnicas de calidad. Queríamos proyectos que marcaran la diferencia, no voluntariados donde las personas hicieran tareas repetitivas y vacías de valor. Hoy, el rural es un espacio para innovar, aprender y cambiar vidas. 🔸 La historia de Iván: de ideas locas a impacto social Uno de nuestros primeros voluntarios fue Iván, un maker apasionado de la tecnología. Nuestro enfoque era claro: probar, aprender y no frustrarnos. Así que empezamos con un reto que nos propusieron los vecinos del rural: programar un gallinero automatizado para no tener que levantarse pronto por la mañana. ¿El resultado? Bueno… si hubiésemos puesto el gallinero en marcha, el único beneficiado directo habría sido el lobo. 😅 Pero ese aparente “fracaso” nos enseñó dos cosas: 1. Aprender es más importante que acertar. 2. Crear desde la comunidad local lo es todo, es el único motivo de lo que hacemos. 🔹 Llevar la robótica al pueblo Poco después, Iván propuso dar talleres de robótica para niñas y niños en la casa del pueblo. Gracias al compromiso de empresas como SiteGround que nos dono material, creamos un espacio seguro en un entorno inmejorable, donde las familias descubrieron que la tecnología no es cosa exclusiva de la ciudad. 🗣️ Tecnoarranxo: tecnología y impacto social Mientras trabajábamos en estos proyectos, detectamos un problema crítico: la brecha digital en el entorno rural a la hora de acceder a un ordenador. Muchas personas no tienen acceso a un ordenador, y eso dificulta estudiar, trabajar o conectarse. Creo que os podéis imaginar la diferencia entre utilizar la IA y revisar una enciclopedia de muchos tomos, ¿verdad? Así nació Tecnoarranxo, nuestro programa de donación y reparación de equipos informáticos. Gracias al apoyo de Revertia, que nos allanó el camino y a la colaboración de Informática Solidaria, que aportó su experiencia técnica, hemos donado y reacondicionado ordenadores para estudiantes, organizaciones locales y aulas comunitarias. Hoy, Iván lidera las donaciones y la puesta a punto de los equipos, llevando tecnología adonde más se necesita. Esta navidad ha repartido más de 40 equipos. 🌱 Lo que aprendimos de Iván Más allá de el proyecto y los ordenadores, lo verdaderamente valioso son las personas. ivan sanchez nos enseñó que, cuando apoyas, confías y dedicas tiempo de calidad a las personas voluntarias, se pueden lograr cosas tan increíbles como el Tecnoarranxo. Este es el verdadero poder del voluntariado, transformar vidas, empezando por la de uno mismo.
